Malema is an opportunist demagogue riding this wave of rage among the poor, the young and the unemployed.

If we could mollify the fury of the millions by producing work, education and prospects, we could defang the ANCYL and everyone would sleep more easily.

I agree whole heatedly with the above statement.

Somehow things in this country has to change, somehow we have to change. We have to start doing something to change the lives of the poor. I am in no way suggesting that we give the poor money. I am suggesting that we give them knowledge, skills and if possible jobs. Somehow the poor must be educated by us who know stuff. Somehow the poor must listen to us instead of listening to someone like Malema. Somehow our attitudes towards the poor must change, they are all not lazy and ungrateful and want free stuff.

If we fail as a nation to steal the poor's ears away from Malema increasing influential rhetoric then we will stop his country from going down like Zimbabwe. It all requires sacrifice though, without sacrifice there's no victory.

Exactly, we MUST do whatever is possible to reduce the # of people and help them move up to the middle class and beyond.

When I go walking around Cape Town I see so many homeless people and a lot of them are in that situation because of mental illness issues.

It kills me to see little kids around here maybe age 3-5 begging a long with their mothers/friends for some money. I mean, this is ALL they know, just heart-breaking. What if I was in their shoes? What would I DO?

We can't save everyone in a day or even a year but we sure need to do something. I do something, I sometimes hire some of the beggars even if it is only for a week or a day, I give them little tasks like: here is R100 rands, go to the store buy me x, y, z and you can keep R50 rands for yourself and I have tried to talk to some and ask why someone as young as them can't get a job, they all reply the with the same line, "I have tried..."

Anyway, great article indeed but people need to realize the poor are people who also want a big house, a car, security and their kids to do well but when you are raised in places where lights go out, used needles are all over the place, no food, no jobs within range, your choices are quite different. Instead of wondering when ADSL prices are going to drop, they are wondering how they are going to put food in their stomachs today or tomorrow. A whole different reality.

This is why when someone like Malema comes in and says, "I will fix your problems". They instantly flock because he(to them) is the only person attempting to fix what is wrong for them. He is their Robin Hood, even if the fortunate(educated/mybb members/those with money) don't see it.

My motto: They are no different from me and you, they are products of their environment.

Not to be too negative here, but would the unemployed masses be interested in the 'hard' work of studying, training then having to work-or would they be more interesed in becoming owners of a gold mine?, yes, all of them can own a mine if nationalization goes ahead....right?

Right, but I believe that people can have their minds altered. What is needed in the ANCYL and the ANC leadership is someone who will be a role model to the masses. Someone who resonates with the poor but also encourages them to work hard to get what they want. We need another Steve Biko, another Mandela. Julius is good for society because he is giving us a glimpse into the future of what he will do if we do not tackle corruption, lack of skills, unemployment and low education levels. The ANC must stop lying to people, it must start telling people to do things for themselves.

Not everything is about Malema, this article is about Melamas's supporters. It's about people who have no hope and see Malema as their hope. What I am saying is that we as South Africans have an opportunity to steal these supporters away from Malema before they cause damage to the country.

Then nationalizing the mines shouldn't even be on the table as that will cost more jobs.

Taking land back from farmers will also not aid this as not only will it result in farm workers losing their jobs but also scare investment as the world will see it as a step closer to what happened in Zim. Rather start up jiont ownerships programs ect. And no its not the farmers that holds up the willing buyer willing seller thing. I know 4 guys that wants to sell but the government came there said we will pay XXXX here is the documentation. Farmer agreed ,bam never hears another thing about it. That's 7-8months ago.

Minimum wage needs to go, as there are how many people that don't earn a cent but would be willing to work for R500 a month. Don't get me wrong I know this is a knife edge to cheap labour,but if a company has XX budget for staff lets say 5 can be hired @ minimum wage. but 10 can be hired at half that. Wont that help another 5 families.

When I came through Beitbridge the other day I was HORRIFIED. There was 8 huge buses waiting at our immigration.
The immigration officer didnt even ask what are you doing here to any of them or when will you leave. He gave them all 3 months stay to find a job.
I have traveled in Africa and damn getting into a country you have to state where you stay/how long/ when will you leave (with proof like a plane ticket). But not here? WHY?

So coming from Musina To Louis Trichart its about 120km I stopped counting at 45 buses coming into SA I had to over took with ZIM number plates.

I still think the Malema angle in this article is only for sensational value. Why only Malema's supporters? Surely it applies to all of the PDI youth? Or do you think that all PDI youth support malema?

While maybe his supporters are worth a mention in the article I certainly dont think its the main theme as the title implies.
