Two alleged robbers died in a shoot-out with police in Johannesburg early on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

Crime intelligence members received information that a robbery was to take place at a businessman's house in Ormonde, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

Police waited at the house and saw six men arriving around 6am. The men entered the house, robbed the businessman of an undisclosed amount of money, and fled.

"As they were fleeing, they were confronted by the national intervention unit and a shoot-out ensued," said Mogale.

Two of the robbers were killed. The remaining four fled in a white car that police believed was hijacked. No one else was injured.

So they knew it was going to happen, and let the robbery take place anyway? How stupid is this?

Surely a much better approach would have been to wait inside until the robbers entered? What if they killed the businessman or some of the family members? And not forgetting the fact, that four of them still got away!!

That's a tough one. There is not much they can arrest them for BEFORE they have committed the crime.
And if the cops were inside it might have sparked a gun fight inside which is more likely to result in unnecessary casualties.

So what is the point of crime prevention if nothing can be done before a crime is committed?
Surely preventing a possible death or rape was more important than catching these guys?

^Exactly. So if they get a tip off for a murder, the murder has to take place first before the arrest can take place?

There is no such thing as "Crime Prevention in South Africa" ... unfortunately.
If these guys had been arrested on a charge of Attempted Robbery, they would be out free walking around in a month or two.
The case would most likely have been thrown out due to NPA ineptitude, loss of docket, or a technicality.
They they would be free to rob again, and the next time the cops would most likely not be there.
Better to catch them for something more serious and send them away for ten years.

Police are on the warpath these days. I can hear the UT voice in my head MULTIKILL!!!!! :D

You've only got breaking-and-entering if you wait inside for them, now they have that, robbery, and possible deadly assault on a police officer: way better, IMHO.

If the cops caught the guys before the robbery they'd have no charge. Catch them after the robbery, they can lock them up (potentially) for a long time.

It's a tricky one. No doubt they did think of all options before planning the counter-assualt. A few weeks back cops foiled a casino robbery at Emperors before the 16 guys managed to actually rob the place.

2 out of 6 not good enough IMO and yes it seems the cops are more interested in making a arrest then safety. I say wait inside and outside, when they enter and are armed shoot to kill. Cops outside disable all vehicles.

Their tactics seem to suck as 4 still got away in a vehicle.

But at least 2 of them will never do it again.
