Ackermann commits to Lions, out of Bok frame

Lions coach Johan Ackermann has reportedly extended his contract with the Johannesburg-based franchise.

According to the Rapport newspaper, Ackermann put pen to paper last Thursday, with an official announcement to be made this coming Tuesday.

More clarity will then be given regarding the length of his new contract.

Ackermann's current contract expires after this year's Currie Cup, and he has been linked to clubs in Japan and Europe.

The Lions had a bye in Super Rugby this past weekend and will face the Crusaders in Johannesburg this Friday (19:00 kick-off).

In committing to the Lions, Ackermann falls out of contention for the Springbok coaching job which is expected to be confirmed on Friday.

Whoop whoop! I think part of why this weekends local SR games were so dour was 'cos no Lions were involved.
OP, are we seriously in a place where Allister is really the best we have to offer?

Yip just need pen to paper but it's a done deal, AC will be the new Bok coach.

So the usual procession of Stormers and Sharks, with an occasional Bull for Bok players then. :(

Look I know we have better coaches, but AC does have a good record. I think he does deserve a chance.

I think we should be making a couple of calls that start with +64, but that's just me and it'll never happen.

EDIT: Also, what Mickey said.

Status quo needs to change. Boks need an Aussie to bring back a winning culture and perhaps an improvement in their 90's state of play....

From my perspective I wouldn't had picked Ackermann this year as he in my opinion needed ‘to earn’ one more Super Rugby season. Ackermann isn’t the only talented SA rugby coach.

To pick an Aussie… no, not in my books. The best available Australasian coach at this stage is Wayne Smith. The better Aussie coaches already has a rugby home. They have been struggling to get that one over the All Blacks.

In the Top League Coetzee had his showdown against Robbie Deans… The Kiwi coach cleaned him out in die semis 42-10.

JA staying as coach for the Lions is good news for the team. Selah.

Johannesburg - The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) on Tuesday announced that coach Johan Ackermann as well as several senior players have extended their contracts with the union until 2017 and beyond.

As the process of extending more players is currently underway, the following players can be confirmed to have committed for 2017 and longer:

Warren Whiteley

Jaco Kriel

Julian Redelinghuys

Malcolm Marx

Robbie Coetzee

Jacques van Rooyen

Dylan Smith

Ruan Dreyer

Robert Kruger

Ruan Ackermann

Fabian Booysen

Jano Venter

Dillon Smit

Elton Jantjies

Harold Vorster

Lionel Mapoe

Rohan Janse van Rensburg

Andries Coetzee

Courtnall Skosan

I think that the Lions supporter base can be happy with this outcome. I wonder how many more long-term extensions will be negotiated by the GLRU?

UJ also squashed the returning Maties...
