JOOMLA! help please

More information about the server it's hosted on would be useful. What OS,serving applications, etc. What access do you have to that server. FTP, ssh etc.

As i said i'm a novice but its an apache server running plesk with host4africa.
I have FTP access
Hope the information is correct and will help

The first thing I can think of is permissions on the files, but that shouldn't be an issue. The next things would be that it didn't actually install the backend properly. Have you deleted the Installation directory as well.

Hi Vegeta, did you pass all the checks before doing the installation?
Yes all checks where passed except 1. SAFE MODE is ON and it should be OFF. I have no clue how to turn if off or even if i'm able to.

Joomla said it can still continue. I have deleted the installation directory, should i upload it again and install again? Do i need the FTP enabled during the installation process?

Maybe re-upload the Administrator folder. You may need to start from scratch. The index.php is fine. It authenticates, but then gets stuck trying to load from there. So it seems as though something is missing from the modules or components for the Administrator backend

Just did a quick install on our BSD server, running PHP_VERSION=5.2.5. Got the green on all of the options. What is the ownership set to on the containing folder.

The permissions? On the folder? It's 755... sorry if thats not what you mean can you pls explain.

Trying to reinstall the whole thing now, I've restored the installation directory. Do i need to delete EVERYTHING and RE-UPLOAD every single file again, geeez thats gonna take a while!
EDIT: No worries i restored the installation directory and wiped the configuration.php file and now i can reinstall

REINSTALLED EVERYTHING... EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM :( What now?

This is a possible fix Linq it seems that safe mode should be turned off in your php.ini file.
Say what? Do i need to create such a file? And upload it where?
Is there one by default and i can just change it?

You'll have to contact your Hosting provider and ask them to modify the php.ini file, sorry was very quick on the post. As an example on my UNIX server it's located in /usr/local/etc/php.ini . I hope that this helps.

Umm....

I have had this problem several times when doing Joomla sites.

Its usually permissions on the index.php file in the administrator folder , the permissions on the /administrator folder itself or sometimes other files that the index.php file calls.

I may be stating the obvious , but have you asked for the apache error log from host4africa?

This will show you exactly why the 500 error is occurring , and will give you clues on how to fix it. My guess is you will see something like : "xxx.php is writable by group" and then you will know which file permissions to change and where.

Get that error log and then post it here minus details that would compromise your server.

thx for the advice will try that now

Hi,

The permissions are definitely at play here. Have you changed the permissions of the index.php file in the administrator directory to 755?

set 755 on everything in administrator dir..... STILL NOTHING :(
