Hi,

I got to play around with Wordpress a bit, I was impressed with what It can do. I have not gotten into the hard core coding with PHP yet. I basically used plugins + wordpress and im impressed.

Is Joomla better than wordpress, vice versa or are they both the same.

If one had to build a website from scratch, would it be better to use Joomla / Wordpress and build on it, or build from scratch using PHP + MySQL and maybe some flash?

Thanks

I prefer Wordpress. I've installed the Advanced Custom Fields and Custom Post Types and these have made for a good CMS.

They are both very good but there are quite a few differences for example joomla allows you to display modules only on certain pages you choose while wordpress does not have this option for its widgets (called modules in joomla)

Creating template and plugins is somewhat easier in wordpress though, and I have notices that there are some free plugins for wordpress that are not free for joomla.

I would say use wordpress for smaller light weight sites and joomla for really big complicated sites.

+1

Wordpress is great, also had setup quite a few Wordpress sites in the past. My other half has taken this over from me though and she also enjoys using wordpress (even builds her own themes now). We have both seen though that Joomla is better suited for the more complicated sites.

Both have quite a few plugins available to ease things up a bit and both are quite easy to use, in terms of CMS.

Building from scratch...eish...hope you have a lot of alcohol available :p

I know its not on your list but you should consider Drupal too. Its got a steep learning curve but functionality wise it beats Joomla and Wordpress hands down. But it does depend on what you are trying to achieve as pointed out already.

Steepest to easiest learning curve would be drupal > joo.la> wordpress.

Buuuuuttt... For wordpress; Check out 2 themes from www.woothemes.com : Canvas theme and Listings theme.
The check out a custom variable plugin ..

I think even drupal fans will be suprised...

I like wordpress far more than joomla, and in most cases it's more than enough to get the job done.
