Well I'm very close to stepping into University for my first year of Journalism, and from all the people I've told I've gotten a mixed bag of replies, like:
1) "everyones doing Journalism these days".
2) "Aren't you going to take the maths/science route".
3) "You're going to have a tough time in that field, especially with the government".
4) "that's not very well paying".
Well those were just the negatives and even though it's gotten to me a little it is still something I really want to do! I don't exactly want to be the type of journalist who is in the middle of current affairs of our country or reporting economics etc...
My main focus is either on Technology (Consumer electronics, gadgets, companies, computer related) or Pop Culture (Celebrities, Social Media, Trends). This is pretty much why I love following MyBroadband or Engadget, TechnoBuffalo and sites like that.
Not to mention Journalism isn't just writing its Television, Radio and may other broad spectrums and categories, that's the brilliance of it!
I so far haven't searched for a student job or anything like that, I don't know if I should wait for my university to begin and see my timetable/lectures first before I go on that path. I'd like to approach some type of newspaper/magazine to ask for any internship opportunities, but I know this might be tough because companies find it a real pain to bring in someone new (let alone someone with little/no experience). So I figure if they see that if I am actually studying a Journo degree it could convince them a little more?
IDK I am just finding it weird at the moment as I was always writing on the school paper and being active on it with photography etc and now I'm left hanging with no way to report at the moment
Anyway, enough rambling.
I just wanted to ask what you guys think about Journalism as a career and what you think about the categories that I want to go into.
