Journalists should have licences: Motsoeneng

SABC acting chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has proposed that journalists have a licence to practice like those in the medical and law professions, the broadcaster reported on Thursday.

Motsoeneng said journalists who acted unprofessionally should be stripped of their licences.

"You know when you are a journalist, you are a professional journalist. If you don't have ethics and principles and you mislead on your reporting, like lawyers... if you commit any mistake they take your licence," he was quoted as saying.

"We should do the same thing with journalists, that is what we need to do if we want to build South Africa."

He was speaking at the annual Joburg Radio Days at Wits University in Johannesburg.

In February, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela released a report “When governance and ethics fail” which found Motsoeneng's appointment irregular. Among other things, his salary increased from R1.5 million to R2.4m in one year.

She found he misrepresented his qualifications, that he passed matric, to the SABC, and recommended he be replaced.

Nonsense. I have a diploma and a degree in journalism - before I got out realising after that it doesn't pay much and pursued IT. But I think that is 'licence' enough for any journalist.
 
Another money-making idea from a govt lackey. Just like the Private Security Industry Regulation Authority. Pay your fees for your business and each employee (even the cleaner) and receive blow-all for it. When you ask them why you are paying, they put the phone down in your ear. Yet ADT say that support them, when I ask why, they say since it is legislated, no other reason
 
Oh Hlaudi, you are so funny.

You just want them to have licenses so you can try and control them and not talk to the ones who publish the naughty things about you.

I listened to an interview with Motsoeneng on 702.

Must say, he came across really badly, sounded like some dimwit, made no sense at all.

Good point actually.

I hereby give Hlaudi permission to institute a Journalist Licensing Forum to investigate the future licensing of all journalists. There is only one requirement, he Has to get a Bachelors degree, an Honours degree and then his MBA, and he has 6 months to do all of that. All course work will be publicly available and the testing and thesis will be independently checked by an international professor who has no affiliation with this country or the ANC.
 
MOTSOENENG SHOULD BE REMOVED: DA

SABC acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng should be relieved of his duties, the DA said on Thursday.

"There is no reason for Mr Motsoeneng to still be at the SABC, and every reason to relieve him of his duties," Democratic Alliance MP Gavin Davis said in a statement.

"Hlaudi Motsoeneng today confirmed why the SABC board must suspend him without delay... [His comments] are not the considered opinions of a responsible and independent public broadcasting professional."

The SABC earlier reported that Motsoeneng proposed that journalists have a licence to practice like those in the medical and law professions.

According to Eyewitness News, Motsoeneng said the media only reported on corruption because the country was run by blacks.

Let me guess, Government institutions will issue and withdraw those licences at will. Only "MP friendly" journo's of a certain race will be granted licences in the end of the day!
 
Sounds like a veiled threat on freedom of speech, cue in state controlled propaganda machine with their twice-a-day-patriotic-anthems.
