Pure js is a pain in the ass, especially when it comes to compatibility. Jquery is a nice abstraction layer. If you've also "gone jquery" by pulling it in then there wouldn't be much point in not using it.

The only part of JavaScript one might be "left behind" in is nodejs. The rest is pretty easy to pickup when you need it. JS is hardly rocket science.I used to hate Javascript like you, but jQuery made me love it. The abundance of js frameworks and libraries is astonishing. You are pretty much left behind if you don't join the crowd tbh.

Firat of all JQuery isn't a framework - it is just a nice wrapper around the DOM and certainly has its uses.
JavaScript is still an ugly clunky thing with no good tools though.
