Hi everyone,

I'm looking for data on the closing share price for shares listed on the JSE (main board). I need daily closing prices (not a chart but the actual price at each point). I need data on a whole range of shares and not just one. I have tried searching but have not found anything other than charts, which don’t really help me.

I would really appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

DD

do you need the history as well, or just day by day as you go along?

Hi Chris,

Would I be able to access the historical data without subscribing?

I remember trying sharenet previously but it didn't have the daily historical share price.

Thanks,

that could be a problem if you want it for free - daily closing prices are readily available, but for historical, you would have to get the data from a brokerage and they would charge you to join them and perhaps even for the data as well AFAIK

With an FNB share trading account you can just type in the share code and get up to 10 years of historic information emailed to you in minutes.

I dont bank with FNB. I'll try giving my bank a call and see if they have the same offer. Crossing figers.

This morning I was looking for similar data going back 12 years and was struggling to find it. The other issue is the data is invariably on share price data, it does not include dividends which are a huge portion of your growth. For instance I was wanting to compare growth figures of some managed funds to just the Satrix40 and it was very hard to do as you can't just compare share price, you also need to figure out the dividends paid out over the years.

The managed funds should be able to supply you with this data pretty easily.

Yep, I have the managed funds data, it was the Satrix data I could not find.

have you tried sanlam itrade, you can take out a virtual trading account for a minimal fee yet you have access to all their data

Stock Data

Hi All

I'm also looking for all the historic stock data I can find to do some statistical analysis. I'm surprised how difficult it is to find... is it copyrighted or anything? If not, don't you think it would be to the benefit of SA companies if this data was more readily available, without some sort of subscription?

Anyways, if anyone's jumped through the hoops to get as much as possible compiled in one neat database file, I would much appreciate you sharing it - and I'll gladly share my analyses and tools. I'm trying to spot trends with regards to P/CF, P/E, P/S, P/B and PEG ratios - and how these compare to other stock markets. Getting these right you can easily get upwards of a 20% return annually.

Thanks
