These seem to be quite popular now...

I left a 2007 Honda Ballade in the garage for about 10 days now the lights come on but it won't start. I assume it's the battery since it's been quite a cold few days...? I don't think the battery has ever been replaced.

Thought I might as well invest in one of those fandangled new Jump Starter Kits since I see that they often also double as a power pack for charging stuff and things, and they often also have a useful LED light.

How to decide which one is right for me, or anyone else?

I got mine from Midas. Got a small inverter from there as well and it serves as a great power source for my ADSL during blackouts.

It's good practice to switch on the headlights of the donor car. Just keep that in mind.

The "donor car" in this case is a self contained unit with jumper cables.

I've not seen this recommended in any owners manual, what would the purpose be?

Otherwise you fry all the electrical goodies built into your expensive modern car. Stuff like ECU, Cluster with gauges and all other switched on gadgets that switches on with the ignition... Gps, Rear view camera display, Self dimming rear view mirror etc.

I used to have one - lead acid battery with leads and light.

Great for a small petrol, but useless for a diesel.

Interesting how the engineers that write the owners manuals, or the ones that actually design the vehicles dont know of this. Surely they would want to avoid situations that can damage the vehicle? Or perhaps they design to a certain standard (such as ISO 7637-2) which allows them to lessen/eliminate the potential dangers when jump starting vehicles.

edit: why is it that people will avoid the easy and simple method of just reading your owners manual, and instead go looking for advice elsewhere from sources that may or may not have the foggiest clue of what they are saying?

I bought one with lights, electric pump and "charging points" on. Could only jump start petrol car and after 1 year the battery inside it was gone, so then it was useless. Cost R1100 back then

Had to buy a R3000 one to jump start a diesel Tucson. Still have it 4 years later and working 100% but does not have lights, pump or "charging" points on, will have to check the brand when I get home.

Don't know if they exist here,

But i once saw a Guy jump start a car with a special cable connected to both cars ciggarette lighters, does take 30 min though and does apparently work quite well

Wonder if its something anybody's tried before?

Cant jump with lighter socket. only 10 - 15 amp fuse there... can however charge battery slowly until full enough to start

Uh, no because the circuit is in parallel. Same voltage ie.

The only time I can imagine this happening is if you tried to start a car with another car that had a monstrous battery by comparison.

Like starting a car from a truck, or a motorcycle from a car.

And even then I don't see how switching the lights on would do anything at all.

Car to car...nope.

Incorrect. It is not the voltage. It is the spike that occurs when you apply the jump clamps to the drained battery. Perfect connection would be an extreme high resistance connection slowly reducing to 0 Ohm and then charging and starting the vehicle with dead battery. I have seen some jump cables with resistance connector in years ago at Auto zone if I remember correctly. Don't know if they worked or not.

Size of battery does not matter. you need in the region of 12V and enough Ah supply to turn the starter rated in Watts. (16 Corolla has 1100W starter for comparison)

you can start a 9 liter International engine with a motorbike charging the batteries and vice versa. The problem is when connecting the leads as stated in post number 17.
