Juniper or Cisco for best foundation in networking?

Good Day All

I need to self-study networking and not sure which to go for to have best possible foundation for networking concepts and technical skills. I wanted to ask the community that has experience in both Juniper and Cisco on their opinions. For now I would go to level 2 on either, and would like to choose the best option that allows me to have the skills to work on the widest range of networking devices.

Ie which course would give me the best generic skills in networking, or are they pretty much the same?

All my friends in networking, and I mean, core of ISPs, all still learn CISCO.
 
cisco is in high demand here, juniper is limited but in use.

both are good qualifications, you choose between JunOS or IOS.

I would say go for Juniper, you can take it overseas, Cisco you can too but there are more people with Cisco certs...
 
Ok actual quote from one of my networking buddies:

For learning Cisco

The Juniper exams are very basic
and a LOL in general
the ICND1 and ICND2 is the best path to start off with from Cisco
then CCNP
then go to Juniper
Juniper is very easy
once you understand the concepts of routing and switching etc
then juniper is actually easier
add the exam codes to look even better

Cisco. You can expand into Juniper but Cisco remains the defacto by and large...
 
I think we should all do huawei or ZTE
The world is going to be taken over by these products anyway.
Might as well learn mandarin while you at it.

Cisco course material is better if you actually read it.
In terms of certification value, both are lower than the Rand.
An influx of brain dumping cert pacmen have saturated the industry and made the value of these things worthless.

The market is also very saturated with network guys, I would suggest doing security or voice if you want to try land a position.
Both require a fundamental understanding of networking though, so probably do the CCNP track, then study security or voice in order to get a foot in the door
 
Thanks all for the replies, looks like to get best foundation is to go CISCO then move into Juniper if needed.

I would like to self study CISCO and then pay only for the exams, is there any books or material you recommend i should get? For now i will only do ICND1 and 2.

Study the technology, not the vendor. I cannot stress this enough.

I cant agree more, 100%. But not quite sure on how to do that? Was trying to find out which course/material between CISCO vs Juniper will give me the best generic networking skills?

CBT nuggets videos and purchase CCNA book from amazon.

Busy studying ICND1 + 2 at moment. should be writing round Jan 2016.

Which CCNA books would you recommend that i look into?
