Ok, I'm probably misunderstanding this so please help me out. Whenever someone posts a topic in the news or ADSL section about a new service in another country, like the 1Gig line in Japan, someone always makes the sarcastic comment that our 3Gig caps will be blown in like a minute or something. Why is that? Yes, duh, I know it is a crapload faster but if I download a 500MB file with a 512KB line or with a 1Gig line it's still only 500MB I'm downloading. The 1Gig line will obviously be faster but the amount I'm downloading still stays the same. Or is their something else I'm not taking into account.

Oh, another thing while I'm here. Uploading and downloading counts towards your cap, right? Some guy at Tellscum was trying to tell my friend that it's only your downloading that counts, but I'm almost sure it's both…… right?

Correct - its up and down.

As far as speed goes it depends on your personal needs. You can drive a car at 10kph or at 100kph and you're still going to get to the same place either way. The point that most people are trying to make is that other countries have these higher speeds - though generally in the 1-8mbs range - while the best telkom will do is 512kbs. We're being left behind as far as progress goes.

I think comes down to this.

If your line is slow, you are less likely to worry about when you'll reach your cap cause at modem speed it takes ages to reach 3GB anyway.

Now here you are with a fat pipe, you have to check your bandwidth monitor very often to ensure you are still far from reaching your cap.

I guess the idea here is set the CAP high enough such that the consumer is less likey to run out of "internet mileage" before the end of the month.

dude 3 gigs of info at 512 or 384 doesnt last a week with alot of ppl

just surfing the net and playing bf 2 every night i get to around 6 gigs no downloads nothing

Thanx guys, it was really bothering me. BTW, is there any reverence to the cap in Tellscums contract, regarding the point that both uploading and downloading counts towards it. My friend's kinda clueless and I'd like to have some proof to back this up and slap him around with it ( he'll thank me later :) ). Right now he'd rather believe his "friend" at Tellscum. :(

Edit: @killadoob: Yeah, i know, i was just using the 3gig cap as a example. I'ts crazy how much bandwidth BF2 uses tho. :(

If he's using Telkom 3gb package you can slap him around for that too!

From http://www.telkomsa.net/products/adsl_telkom_internet.jsp

Always-available connection - The connection is not dialled up but is always available except for session timeout after 24 hours. This was introduced to determine daily usage in order to measure and manage the volumes uploaded and downloaded. This session timeout also ensures that dynamic IP addresses are assigned. Session timeout will occur 24 hours after previous login. Customers can login immediately after being disconnected. In addition the ADSL session will also be disconnected after idling for sixty minutes. A right click on the mouse will re-establish the connection.
