Hey
Now I have suffered as well, with adsl I mean. I use to have it but I moved to iBurst and 3G.
Anyway now just a silly idea, but how about the users attack telkom via their ADSL line?
I mean local capping is coming in nov, so we still got this month to go crazy on local, now hear me throught, they already blame that abuse is the main reason for local capping, so why not protest with abuse!
if telkom is correct, then they are losing money because of the local abuse(Gee, you would think that they would act on it when it started 3/4 years ago).
So why not make them lose some more money :p
why not go crazy and reach the monthly usage of TB!
I'm sure that a few 100 TBs might put a small dent into their pockets and their investors pockets.

E-Boycott =)

Anyway prob gonna get flamed, but rem, it's just a silly idea not an actual suggestion =)

So - after thinking and thinking and thinking about it, I cannot find a flaw in the plan. Have a few stipulations though:

1 - when we do this, we have to do this as a wholesale HTTP strike, otherwise shaping will simply remove the attack from the picture.
2 - we have to get HTTP content from a fast international site, that will not dissapear [fallover] when we start.
3 - The content must not be bufferable - otherwise the SAIX cache server will just send us all the same stuff over and over.

These are the beginnings of the stumbling blocks. Any other type of attach will hurt us, but not hurt teklom. We have to actually use international bandwidth for this to work.

Any ideas ... ?

We're talking local bandwidth here... we should just set our pages to refresh on the telkom web site (or would that be an attempt at denial of services?) every 2 seconds for a month. Or something similar

Well, not to burst anyone’s bubble, but keep in mind Telkom is a business - if they lose money for whatever reason they will have to make it back. Who do you think is going to pay for that - not themselves I can guarantee you that.

Unfortunately (as proven by Nov 1) Telkom can do pretty much whatever they want, so if they lose money they will get it back - from us the customer.

Well taking into consideration November 1st isn't 100% official yet, going ahead with this plan will just further jeopordize us.

What better way to justify November 1st than local usage exceeding 100TB??

Well i don't think to many people are going to "waste" their last month of 30 gig madness on this and anyway people who have got the 30 gig accounts are going to milk it cuz they know its the last month. So it should happen regardless.

Bit of a problem really... if we didn't do this before November 1st, then it would cost us (collectively) hundreds of thousands of rand. If we did it before, it justifies the nov 1st price hikes.

I'm not pointing out flaws, just trying to think...

Lol ok sorry
My plan was formed on the following believes::

a) Nov 1 = offcialaly announced harcap on local ... reason = abuse
b) That most people will seek other means of internet (I Have)

Again it's a silly idea based on silly believes and perhaps it was more of a inside joke to pirates, since this is the last month, if Nov1 hardcap is true(which is), that they can go crazy, and why not go off with a bang eh ?

Dont take this as a series ststement thought, I dont want to be labeled as the guy that ignited the fire you know :p

My main reason behind this is simply because I'm getting tired of waiting for things to happen, There's always some big promise in the works that will change our dreams, but it will always stay a dream.
Just getting bored :P

Any business, no matter the size, is reliant on their customer base, and is totally reliant on that customer base "paying" for services or products provided.

There are basically two ways of effectively protesting against poor service or high prices - boycott the product/service, or use the product/service but then refuse to pay for it.

Boycotting hurts the business but also hurts you the customer as you have to go without, especially if the product/service is not available from an alternate source.

Using the service and then refusing to pay for it only hurts the provider of that product/service and hurts them even more than boycotting does as they have now incurred the expense of providing you with the product/service as well.

If all or a majority of customers refuse to pay the company can decide to deny their product/service to those customers but will be cutting their own throat as they will be effectively destroying their customer base.

Instead, they will be forced to improve their service or provide the product/service at a price their customers are prepared to pay as doing this will get their customers to pay for the product/service they have already used and will keep them as paying customers in the future.

My suggestion would be to protest the new Telkom ADSL pricing by using it to the fullest potential but then refusing to pay for it until the pricing structure is changed.

If the majority of ADSL subscribers do this Telkom will be forced to review their pricing structure as they will hurt themselves by cutting everybody off and this will be the only way to recover the costs for the service already provided.

All ISP's reselling SAIX ADSL should also band together and utilise the service to its full extent but then refuse to pay SAIX/Telkom until an acceptable pricing structure is implemented.

SAIX/Telkom would cut their own throats by denying the service to all the ISP's so will therefore be forced to adjust the pricing structure to recover the existing costs and to continue getting a revenue stream from the ISP's.

LOL - Yup - Teklom are wise to that trick. They've already stated publically that the ADSL service can be scrapped at any time. They simply don't care.

I say lets wait for SNO to offer ADSL, then doit.

Telkom may say that they don't care and are prepared to stop the ADSL service but that is an empty threat!

No company, no matter how big, will be prepared to throw away a monthly income in excess of R50 million per month!

I'm sorry, but with suggestions like this I can understand why Telkom doesn’t take us serious.

This has been debated so many times, let's face it, there will be no unity in fighting Telkom, the majority of peoplr are happy with 3 gig, they surf a bit, do their email, let the kids use it for homeowrk and at a push their banking, they are probably unaware about the November issue. It is unfair, if I pay for 30 gig I want 30 gig to dispose of as I want, cap me when they are used up. When I go and shop it is my choice to be reasonable and buy the basics or blow it all on a luxury that is called freedom, Telkom is a monopoly, so we can move over to cells (sorry no more Vodacom for me) and if our ISP dont' find a solution there are a couple of other options worth investigating, we will be drooling at the international speeds but at least we sort of will get what we pay for. We can still hurt their pocket. Sorry long wimded and pesimistic..
