Just a warning about Windows antivirus.

Defender is fine, in addition to having any AV is you have to have a bit of common sense to go along with it.

If you are downloading suspicious/pirated content, at some point your AV is going to block it and in order to get it to work, you'll need to disable or bypass your AV.

It's no different to telling your bodyguard to take a hike while you wait for a nigerian prince to show up.

That is what bothers me about this infection. I don't do pirated software. All my stuff is original. I refuse to use anything less. I downloaded a demo from a legit website.

As for McAfee, it is easy to get a 1year key from the local store. It runs with Microsoft Defender I did not disable it. My biggest mistake was not using a VM.

That is the thing, I suspect one of 3 but because I no longer have my search history it is kind of hard to backtrack. So sorry for the one screaming I am dodging the question. Does he even know what a repartition and format do? But I am looking into it. As soon as I find it again I will share the link. I know I downloaded two versions of Electronic Workbench. The one did not work at all.

Also not sure I want to take the risk to download it again.
 
What worries me is I know for a fact I scanned the installer before installing the software. I didn't show any alerts. Now I am worried that the problem starts once I click to install or click to run. I don't really know what to do. Also who to say I will find the same website again?

I did a search for it now and I don't recognize any of the landing pages except for the one linked below. But this one installed correctly that I do know.

The one I downloaded from this link worked the other one didn't I am looking for that one now. But you are welcome to check out this link but I think it is clean. Electronic Workbench

Because the obvious thing to do before a format is to download my search history to a thumb drive from an infected computer? Just so that I can infect my new install again. Congratulations Bliksis. Big brain move if there ever was one.

Big brain move? Oh dear. Moral of the story, you download malware from a dodgybsite.

I wouldn't trust that site for downloading software. It's a download aggregate site like CNET and it has a load of skanky looking ads.

In general I only download from the official site and choose Free Open Source Software whenever possible (which it almost always is) over proprietary freeware, trial or demo versions

I had a good long search and the website I provided looks like the one I used. Was it? Possibly maybe but not necessarily. I can't remember how many websites I visited that day. But yea I am just going to call it a loss, a lesson learned and leave this here as a warning that some stuff can slip past Windows antivirus.

Is McAfee the best? No, everyone here knows there is better. But I got it because it is what was available to me at the time. So I leave it at that.
