Windows 7 64 bit
6Gb DDR3 - 1333 Ram timing
2 x 450Gb Cheetah 15.7K SAS drives
1 x Intel X25 SSD drive
Adaptec 3805 Raid SAS Controller
Intel I7 Extreme 6-core Processor
Asus P6T6 WS Revolution M/B
Geforce GTX285 Graphics Card
42" LCD Monitor

We're working on large graphics files (up to 1.6Gb each).............

Why only 1333MHz DDR3? What's the timings at?
When you work with big files, proper RAM should make a difference if I'm not mistaken.
I didn't know the 6 core desktop CPUs were available yet...I know the Xeons should be.

The i7-980X is available, retails for $1080 in the states. But that PC is far from the ultimate imo. You can easily put 24Gb of RAM into it for a start, and a better GPU with more RAM than the size of the file you are working on (2Gb version of the 5870, the 5970 or the currently unavailable GTX480 for instance). I'd also put SSDs into a RAID array - just one on its own for the OS, then RAID a few of these (1Tb SSD with 870/780 mb/s read/write speeds) for storage.
You have to admit, saying you built 'the ultimate' is just looking for trouble on a forum like this.

How would a 30" Dell LCD be better than the 42" LCD he has on there already

Maybe because 2560x1600 >> 1920x1080 and IPS has far superior colour rendition? Plus if you are sitting close to a 42", there is a lot of colour change across the screen. But I would get this one

So smaller is better (in this case) :)

That HP does look very nice... :D

Sounds more like a machine for ripping DVD's and BR's and not a machine for rendering :P
BUT not taking anything away, a very nice machine by any standards :)

GTX285 is a fail if it's a gaming PC. At least at the levels you're talking about... 5970 would be more like it. Or 480.

AFAIK, the i7 CPUs can only handle 1333MHz RAM, unless you overclock.

WOW I've got a better 3D card and PSU than this guys ultimate PC - also running a 42" as well

I bought it about 16 months ago.

Synaesthesia is correct - should of went for the dell
Archer also has a point - 6GB of RAM is far less than "ultimate"

Well heres to assuming it was 3x2gb and not 6x1gb.

Put together 2 very similar systems on Monday for my studio. Got a 2x 5850 in one and a QuadroFX in the other. Gonna be fun to see which does better.

Tru with the topic though. Its always the ultimate till tomorrow, or when you come onto myBB.

+1 on the RAM - should have 10GB RAM at least for rendering.
And I wonder if a Quadro card wouldn't work better for these purposes... Is this 2d or 3d rendering?

i7's run in tripple channel mode, so 10gb would revert to dual channel...
Totally agree on the Ram, deffo 12GB or more imo
285 is just lol

It's an awesome PC. Core i7-980X utter insanity! Doesn't matter that *only* a GTX 285! It's not a gaming PC.
