Just Got A Chromecast. Can I Netflix?

Hi so I have an aggregate of questions

I have a normal LG HDTV not a SmartTV so I decided to "upgrade" my TV with a Chromecast.

I was wondering is it possible for me to get Netflix to work on my Chromecast here in SA?

Mind you I actually do not have Netflix or any form of VPN/SmartDNS.

There are so many resources online on how to do it and im overwhelmed, I just want a tried and tested solution (if it exists)

Oh good sir that's not all. You going to have to get the Netflix app on your phone to be able to control the chromecast. You going to need a vpn for that

Why would you need a VPN?

Static routes on your dsl / internet router

I don't recommend a vpn for streaming when a dns service will do just fine and not impact your connectivity speed.

Unotelly, a sideloaded version of Netflix, but make sure its not the latest one. And a credit card and address that works for netflix. And if you have kids, its not your Netflix...

I haven't had any issues using the latest versions of Netflix on Android. Currently using 3.9.3 and it works fine.

How do you manage to get it to work? Are you using a VPN?

The newest version of Netflix for Android that works for me is version 3.7.1. Apparently after that the Google DNS server addresses are hard-coded in the Android app and you cannot bypass it by static routing on your router.

I don't know why the static routes don't work but I do it a bit differently. I'm using port forwarding to forward any UDP traffic on port 53 going to Google DNS directly to my primary Unotelly DNS.

Most consumer routers don't allow you to port forward on the LAN (only WAN) though. I use pfSense.

The Chromecast defaults to using Google DNS, you just need to block it from using Google DNS on your router and it will resort to the DNS your router is set for. If you are using Unotelly Netflix will work.
