Just got my bundle loaded!

Hey people, loaded a dataLIVE bundle onto my contract today. Connected my Nokia 6230 via bluetooth to my notebook.

Connected at quite a good rate of 460Kbps. I assume this is automatically using the MTN EDGE network.

I'm quite happy right now.
 
That rate of 460kbs is the port connection speed. I had by bundle loaded on Thursday and have done a little testing with my Nokia 6630. At this stage I get an average systained download speed of around 5 KB/s sometimes up to 20KB/s. Note too impressive at this stage and the problem is I don't know if it's using EDGE or not. Speaking to MTN business solutions they told me that EDGE hasn't officially been launched but certain areas are operational - as indicated by the YELLO BROADBAND on the cell display, which I do get in Table View.

So it looks to me as though I'm not getting anything better than GPRS. Does anyone know how I would find out if I'm definately using EDGE or not?

Okay, so as sbloomer stated, it must be port speed.

My download speed test showed this:

*Your line speed is approximately 89.3 Kbps or 10.9 kBytes/sec*

In Pinelands when I connect, I get a connection of 125Kbps and when I'm at home in the Plumstead area I get the 460Kbps.

But I do get the Yello Broadband notification in both areas.

I guess we still need some clarification from MTN whether EDGE is operational or not.
 
EDGE was activated on the first few live commercial cells on MTN in late October 2004. This was tested and found to be stable so remained activated. Customer would have been able to access it from that time on.

During this time MTN committed to commercial EDGE rollout and began national coverage. This has continued until today with more sites being added on a continuous basis as the hardware was switched on or upgraded and new links added.

MTN has not pushed EDGE aggressively as the coverage needs to be consolidated within the target areas and this should happen soon.

The highest theoretical radio speed of EDGE as of today is 236.8 kbps downlink and 118.4 kbps uplink. This compares with the theoretical speeds of 3G of 384 downlink and 64 kbps uplink. Both these technologies are still evolving.

The speed of 460 kbps cited sounds suspiciousally like the bluetooth connection speed (between the PC and the handset). Newer bluetooth units give a speed of around 921 kbps.
