Update Description : Ammendments to the SAIX SMTP Mail Usage Policy

Policy Ratelimiting will be implemented on the SAIX SMTP servers to limit and manage the inflow of email relay traffic. This will be
phased in from 24 October 2005 and the following restrictions will apply:
- Limit the number of messages to less than 360 per hour. (This limit counts all the recipient addresses as a message, thus a message with 10 recipients will count as 10 messages).
- Limit the total message volume to 250 Mega Bytes per hour.
- When one of the above limits is exceeded, a block will be applied to the offending source address for the remainder of the hour.

The amended policy is required to curb the small percentage of users sending in excess of 9600 mails per day.

Well boo, hoo, hoo SAIX. If you cannot provide a decent service, I will just have to find/become one myself.

That is not good if you have a big company, but small companies who aren't spamming should be safe.

If you have 100 employees they can each send 96 emails per day...

I must admit. I can sometimes get close to that if not more...



It will hurt businesses sending bulk communications to loads of customers. An easy solution would be to provide your own mail handling service...

Just thought of an unrelated issue that has to do with the 1st of November changes to ADSL. I wonder if people who get capped locally as of 1 November will still be able to check mail on their Telkom accounts? This is a SERIOUS problem if they don't allow access to mail!!!! It is a serious matter PERIOD!

eeek, so the poor next guy that gets the IP after the spammer hits his 12 hour reset wont be able to send emails for a while.
I am glad I use a VPN for my emails.

Yeah i can see it now. Clever administrators will be doing an IP refresh on the hour every hour and carrying on business as usual. In the mean time, the poor bloody home user who picks up a blocked IP suffers.

The best thing about all this is that the problem is with all this trojan zombie ADSL home user pc's sending out messages. Why not notify these user of the problem then just selling them another 3 gigs?
