Just how much RAM does 32-bit Windows support?

^^ Not correct e.g. Windows 7 can address up to 192GB of RAM.

Total addressable memory for 32 and 64 bit:
2^32 / 1024 / 1024 = 4096MB
2^64 / 1024 / 1024 = 17 592 186 044 416MB

MB= KB then you would be on the money....

Pardon my ignorance, but can I register a Win7: 64-bit with a 32-bit key?

Depends what you have if you baugt a ccopy of home premium etc... yes key will work on both if it is ISO ie shipped with your pc im not so sure...

I'm thinking of downloading the 64- bit version and using the key?

And no it was not shipped with my PC

A 32bit Operating system can only support up to 3.4GB of ram. You should upgrade to a 64bit OS anyway since one day everyone will be moving up to a 128bit os.

Where do you guys get this from? A 32bit OS can access upto 64GB RAM. Microsoft has chosen to limit their 32bit OS's 3.2GB RAM to get you to pay more for a better system that supports 64GB RAM. 32bit systems are NOT limited 3.2GB RAM. please gets your facts straight.

Ja, well since 95% of the world uses Microsoft, pardon us for talking about that. :p

Really? How do you get to that figure?

I tried to correct the statement of "32bit OS can only use 3.2GB RAM". It should be reworded to "32bit Windows can only use 3.2GB RAM, DUE TO Microsoft's programming limitations on their OS". Linux, UNIX, Novell, and MAC don't have that limitation.

Very few photographers, graphics designers, 3D designers, modelers, etc even bother with Windows. And I want to think that about 5% of all our PC's & servers have Windows installed for that matter as well.

Very few? How did you come up with that vague figure? If you are going to attack someone elses generalised statements, then you should probably not use them yourself.

And yes, so Linux and a few other OS's can use 64GB of RAM while running in 32 bit mode. But since the OP asked what 32 bit WINDOWS can run, 4GB is the answer (for all compenents added up, RAM + GPU + Bios etc), which usually means that around 3 - 3.5GB is usable in Windows.

go and look at the thread title again... you see the word "Windows" there? Windows is a Microsoft product... and hence that is why we are only talking about Windows in this thread. kapisch?

Now go play with your non-windows toy.

FAIL! Epic FAIL!

If you re-read what I commented on, then you'll see where you made the mistake:

This has nothing todo with Windows, but Operating System in general.

The person that made that comment was talking about Windows operating systems... no matter what you think or how you misinterpret it... that is what he was talking about. Deal with it.
