I bought desktop pc with the following specs

I3 processor
4 ggb ram
with following motherboard
http://www.jwele.com/motherboard_detail.php?843

My problem is with the HDMI output, it's not working. (I will be mainly using this pc to 1: play media files avi and mkv and 2: to torrent & 3: To surf) What steps should I follow to get the HDMI working. I am using a samsung 32 inch sq01 as my tv/monitor.

Thanks in advance for advice.

Have you done an update straight after installation?

Also have you checked Settings Displays to see if monitor is picked up and active?

welcome to an endless list of problems with ubuntu/linux. Its the most newbie unfriendly OS i have ever come across.

Have you installed the official drivers or using the standard Ubuntu drivers? It appears your motherboard has an Intel gpu. Never used one of those on Ubuntu, sorry.

Motherboard website says as much:

Due to different Linux support condition provided by chipset vendors, please download Linux driver from chipset vendors' website or 3rd party website.

I only use Nvidia HDMI and it works perfectly. It must be a driver issue. Try searching for your chipset driver and Ubuntu solutions:

Code:
lspci | grep VGA

I trust you can still use normal VGA/DVI on the board?

rh1@rh1-desktop:~$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12)

rh1@rh1-desktop:~$ dpkg -l | grep intel
ii intel-gpu-tools 1.2-1 tools for debugging the Intel graphics driver
ii libdrm-intel1 2.4.32-1ubuntu1 Userspace interface to intel-specific kernel DRM services -- runtime
ii whois 5.0.15ubuntu2 intelligent WHOIS client
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.17.0-1ubuntu4 X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver

rh1@rh1-desktop:~$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory

Sorry for the late reply had to re-install ubuntu after update as I got a no root error message. I have updated everything per the update manager. Yes the VGA is working.

regards

ps: for the newbie ubuntu user like myself click on the dash home and search for terminal to input these command lines

Are you trying to connect a normal monitor or a TV to the PC?

I cannot find an instance where someone could not get HDMI to work on Intel, it should just be plug and play.

I have a Intel Icedale motherboard with onboard HDMI for my HTPC, and it worked with Ubuntu 12.04 out of the box, though it is XBMCBuntu its still using Ubuntu 12.04 packages/repos.

Pretty certain I didn't have to do anything special, it just works out of the box.

Unless you have both DVI and HDMI connected, then things get funky.

Installed ubuntu 12 for my aunt on a netbook, she has only used windows and does not like change very much... converted her in a week. Her desktop is also now running ubuntu, I only install LTS tnough.

should have said you must use pastebin.com. but oh well.

it seems vesa and intel video drivers are being loaded. i am using an nvidia card but note no vesa drivers are loaded

Code:
$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep vesa
$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep vidia

my suggestion is that you search google for something like xorg.conf ubuntu intel hdmi

i am not familiar with intel based graphics (esp hdmi) but maybe the search above will come up with a result that can automatically create an xorg.conf for you.

I am limited to 1000 characters at a time with about 12000 characters remaining, if you could point me in the direction to what you would like to see I can copy and past that specific section

as a general guide it's usually better to use www.pastebin.com when posting output which is long.

being an ubuntu user, you should also look topwards the ubuntu forum. you may find someone there has asked the same question before.
