I run a Vista simulator. I just turned on all the flashy crap in XP, changed the background image, took some memory out of my box and clocked down the CPU. Then broke Media player. Works like a charm. One great thing about vista though. It causes a clean reinstall of XP which is generally good from a defrag point of view.
the words are those of the BOfH, but the sentiment is mine. I have run Vista RC and Retail. Can't stand it. Doesn't give me anything XP doesn't already and breaks lots of stuff. I won't be downgrading until I really, really have to.

"All the flashy crap in XP" really isn't much at all....
How is media player broke btw, I remember some of the Beta versions being pretty bad, but the final works flawlessly now for me.
I also don't see what Vista broke, everything works fine. What problems have you run into?

Nah, just one of those on the bandwagon. Its fashionable to hate Vista so everybody who thinks they matter does it.

It didn't break anything because those programs are not Vista ready, and some hardware doesn't have relevant drivers yet. How that is Vista breakign something, I wouldn't know.

I tried Vista transformation patch for Xp and it was nowhere near the Vista experience.

Someone needs to explain the difference between all the different versions of Vista and how many times you can use it etc etc... cause it's very confusing.

Just make sure that all your peripherals work as expected. My hp d125xi couldn't print full duplex from vista due to the vista driver. I also could not use my scsi scanner or memory sticks. The nvidea card was totally unstable on booting.

Vista is designed to downgrade your media outputs if you try to play certain types of content. So play wha microsoft calls "Premium Content" and you better have HDMI etc because everything else is going to get downgraded. It's a feature!
Well excuse me for having an opinion asswipe. Either grow up or learn to have a discussio without immediatly resorting to hurling insults.
Changing the OS so that half the hardware and software out there doesn't work is breaking it. Of course you will find plenty of suckers who will say it's the hardware and softwares fault for not supporting the OS. It also has DRM stuff running chewing up memeory and processor like mad. Doesn't matter if you are playing any content. Wow what a benefit to you the consumer. So go ahead, buy a really expensive OS that will probably require a major upgrade of hardware and software while giving you no tangible benefits other than "being easy on the eye". Vista gives you nothing you couldn't have on XP. New interface? Try Window Blinds. Or the new enhaneced security? Bollocks, you still need to buy antivirus / firewall etc. Only now you need a new one. I promise you, your Vista installation is no more secure (and probably less so) than my XP one. Want to use DirectX 10? Go drop R6000 on a new graphics card please. Want to play an HD DVD? Go buy hardware to support HDMI (or get an intentionally downgraded picture".
Vista is not driven by a technical or consumer need. It's driven by Microsoft's marketing need. You don't need it, but Microsoft needs you to buy it.

Still waiting for stable NVidia graphics + Creative sound drivers before I'll take the plunge and get Vista.

Okay.. that. Well that is only this Premium content stuff, which personally I'm never going to be using. Everything else still works fine.. but granted, I wonder exactly how bad that is if I ever do buy some "premium content".
You did make it sound a lot worse than this one feature which is all I can think of.
I don't think you could say half the hardware and software doesn't work, not at all really. Quite a bit of enthusiast/professional hardware or software doesn't work yet, but they will get upgrades. Vista has been officially out for a whole two weeks, remember. Most hardware that people want to use will work fine so far. The only problem I have is my M-audio soundcard, simply because M-Audio haven't released drivers, like many of the professional audio brands, yet Creative had drivers very soon. So for the majority of people almost everything will work.
I don't know what DRM stuff is running, but I assume nothing by default, only if you actually use this "Premuim Content", which sounds like a worse idea everyday, and that is purely Vista's fault. I suppose the owners of the content might have something to do with it too..
And the graphics cards are expensive because they just came out, R6000 is a stupid argument against it. It will become the norm and cheaper DX10 cards will be released etc etc and all games will use it and so on, I'm sure you knew this. I guess you were just angry

in regards to HD it downgrades it if you dont have HD which means you get dvd quality

What are media outputs?
Speakers, displays, what exactly?
Vista is not designed to do anything that content providers (read Warner, Columbia, Paramount, EMI, BMG etc...) do not want done in the first place.
The downgrading you are talking about is the down sampling, of HD 720 and 1080 content to standard definition (576) for output devices (displays) that do not 1) feature a digital interface, 2) do not have an HDCP chip installed.
This is not Vista's doing but a requirement for any device that plays HD content in the form distributed on Blu-Ray discs or HD-DVD. This has nothing to do with Vista.
If you didn't know Bill Gates, followed soon by Steve Jobs spoke against DRM, but for their products to be certified they need to agree to the terms put forward by content providers.

Read a little, think a little bit more, calm down, watch your language, then maybe post something on what you may have a slight idea about.
I will not proceed to tell you anything about DirectX10 because frankly it would fly right past you (most things would, considering you don't know much about anything Vista related)
Are you aware that to play any HD content even in a stand alone player you will need a carrier that has HDCP and HDMI or DVI output? The receiving device (TV or whatever you use) will also need a DVI/HDMI -In and an HDCP chip? Once again this has nothing to do with Microsoft unless Microsoft is all of a sudden making stand alone players with Vista on them. If so please advise on where to find said players...
BTW only in SA is GeForce8 R6000, in the U$, cheapest DX10 GFX card is R2,198 and by June there'll be $69 DX10 capable parts. That you get riped off in SA has nothing to do with Microsoft and Vista...
As for Vista being less secure than your XP, you're wrong (no surprise once again). Vista is based on the Widows2003 framework, which is by far more secure than the Windows 2000 base that XP uses. All the service packs in the world for XP will not make it better than Vista without any service pack.

errr...anywayz...I'm running XP Pro..and the reason for me not installing windows vista are...
1.) Did you read! I said my PC is running
2.) It's running stable
3.) There's nothing Vista offers that I really need
4.) I don't have the money to go blow on software I don't really need
5.) Not in the mood to go search for drivers and updates and stuff
6.) If it aint broken...don't fix it
