I've noticed that the last few days the internet has been really slow, voip has been quite jittery and playing Battlefield has just been unpleasant and was wondering if a large event that attracts thousands of people from all over could be an effect?

Maybe its madiba' health concerns that have the world to all our news sites' servers

It doesn't sound like a line issue to me. Based on my current experience, it's the Telkom exchange that's most likely at fault. The dreaded Exchange Congestion disease...
Try doing a tracert to your Battlefield URL (or any other one that's important in your internet life), and look at the delay on the first hop, to the ISP. If it's more than a few tens of milliseconds, it's not your line.
I've just been through this (and am still suffering after weeks). My ping to German World of Tanks servers used to be a consistent 220-230ms, but these days it's all over the show, from 300-400ms up to well over a second, and erratic as hell. Needless to say, I'm not getting much game time on WoT!
Telkom has tested the line, and moved me to a quieter line - no change.
My ISP (Plugg) has weighed in with advice, but is unable to cure the problem.
I even in desperation tried a different router - and tried dropping my sync rate (although I already had 12-14dB noise margin).

Nothing helps.

Telkom, please upgrade the Bryanston exchange! It's about time...

Your question doesn't really have an answer because you didn't provide enough info. Are you playing international servers or local? Same applies for the VoIP, where is the server located? Who is your ISP. How fast is your line? What is your LAN contention? What is your latency to your first hop / gateway beyond your router. Are you sure you aren't maxing out your internet or just have a line fault?
