Nice one.

It still amazes me that when some people get an Apple device, they think they're getting a magical unicorn or a Bugatti Veyron, the difference is, Bugatti don't use 1400 datsun parts and add 800% markup.

Mac parts are literally average desktop parts in a nice pretty box, may as well add a faggy ribbon.

But because they're paying so much, it just HAS to be the best.

I have an i7 laptop that plays bluray, has 4GB ram upgradable to 16GB, 2 hard drive bays, I paid 7000 for it but was lucky to have someone visit california and brig it back to me (more than a year ago).

How much would a Mac cost that has exactly the same parts, 30 000?

Discuss.

Mac laptops are actually generally well priced for their power because Apple exerts such control over their suppliers and restricts consumer upgrade choices.

However, their desktops are overpriced. Badly.

In the past - yes.

But nowadays let's be honest - they're not THAT much more expensive? There's definitive a premium on some products, but not double like it used to be. I'd probably pay the premium for the look, feel and quality.

If you are in the market for a high quality (close to) 2nd best product that looks beautiful, then Apple is perfect for you. If you want the best (as in highest specced stuff, then there are other vendors with better hardware), but Apple to make a nice clean product and once you get rid of the operating system it comes with by default... its even better.

In life, things that are better quality and look better - cost more. People pay a premium for a car because it's got a Sport package ; people would rather buy a small BMW than a larger Nissan etc

Would you not pay a 20% premium for an Apple based on quality and looks alone?

Some people need the os it comes with in order to remain productive. I could probably squeak by using windows if I had to but why would I choose to make life more difficult? I've got better things to occupy my time.

Can you get the desktops without the display though? I was under the assumption that the display was built into the cost and those are usually way above the PC flat planels you get in the shops.

The desktops you're referring to are the iMacs. The other ranges, mini and MacPro, do not come with a built in screen.

This iMac ( IMAC 21.5-INCH CORE I5 2.5GHZ QC/4GB/500) is R12,000.00

I think a LED 22" IPS panel from LG is about R2,500.00 and the OS included is another R1,500.00 ... so R4,000.00. That leaves you with R8,000.00 for the actual CPU

* remember those are online prices. To be fair, use that R8,000.00 to build your PC from a standard brick and mortar store like Incredible Connection. I think you'll see the difference between buying the above Mac and an equivalent PC is not *that* far off

Core i5 3.3Ghz, 4gb ram, 1tb harddrive + decent motherboard = approx. R3k (depending on quality/brands used. can go as low as R2,500 or a bit higher to about R4k max). So that's a 100% price increase for the mac on hardware that's slower/less space. OS isn't much difference and obviously screens are not relevant.

Apple products are more of a brand name than anything else. Yes the quality is generally higher than your average pc equivalents. Yes it's stylish. But it's like the people I know who will rather buy a shirt for R500 because it has a brand name on it instead of an equivalent for R80 that's the *same* quality (I'm not talking about buying a R500 shirt vs a R15 crappy one).

Or you could compare it with machines with a similar form factor.

HP TOUCHSMART 610 -1000ZA ALL IN ONE

Intel® Core i3 550 Processor 3.20GHz .

I'm not a fan of desktops but the "apple tax" doesn't seem particularly egregious.

.. at the cheapest known online store you can find? :/

The below is from PC International which is actually one the cheapest online stores. It's just under R3,900.00 for the below components. Note the sh*tty motherboard I used as well.

Add the case, OS, DVD, graphics card etc and the IPS screen and I'm sure the difference is within 20%.

Yup you are Apple`s target market for their OS, I am not. Not everyone does what you do or experiences the same "problems" you have with other operating systems. iOS is simple and has its place for its target demographic.

Please show us a cost comparison between a PC vendor and an Apple based on the same specs. Even if you built the machine yourself, got the cheapest possible plastic POS case and bought all the parts from a small time online store you wouldn't get the PC at half the price of the Mac.

And if you want to do an actual comparison, compare the Mac to a PC from Dell, HP, Asus, Sony etc.

iOS or Mac OS X?

Perhaps but since we're talking about desktop operating systems it's irrelevant in this discussion. Lets try to keep the thread on topic. :)

Has any one compared 15x Dell alienware with a 15in macbook pro spec wise and price wise...

Look - another battle in the OS platform wars. Boring....

Move on - use your preferred OS and forget about the other. Save your money for a new Mac once every 7 years using your life savings, because they last longer, or buy the best PC every second year for next to nothing, because they become obsolete a lot faster.
