Cape Town – There is a running joke among fishermen about their own tendency to tell tall tales about their catches of the day, exaggerating the size as well as the time and effort it took to reel it in.

So, when Renier Nortje tells people about the 1,8m-long, 60,1kg kabeljou he caught while fishing at Botha beach near Glentana, they may take it with a pinch of salt. The average size of kabeljou caught along SA's beaches is about 20kg.

Fortunately for Nortje someone was there to capture the gargantuan on camera, providing him with evidence he will hopefully keep for life!

I love kabeljou, a fishy ambrosia, the food of the gods, pescatarian deliciousness

My grandfather caught a cod this size. They are long since fished out.

Nice fish that, most that come out that size can't be revived.
