Kader Asmal Dies

His death is sad, but unfortunately he will also be remembered for that un-wonderful education system, Curriculum2005 (unless I am mistaken).

He sadly underestimated how good a teacher you need to be to implement OBE properly - at the private schools OBE worked pretty well - but then they had/have all the necessary accoutrements and teaching expertise to effectively implement.

Unfortunately, for the rest of the education system it was nothing short of a train smash!

R.I.P. Only thing I didn't like about his work was him combining higher education institutions. It did more harm than good. Otherwise he should be proud of himself for a life well lived.

oh man what a shock this was when i saw the news last night. i also didnt like what he tried to do with the education system but i always respected his initiative, it was always clear that he had SA best interests at heart. a true leader and will be sorely missed especially now in these dark days lead by the "new" anc leaders :(

Him too. He was under Blade at the time.

Point is, it's a common fallacy to associate Asmal with OBE.

But Blade has never been in government until now. What was his position when he thought up OBE, honest question I had no idea. Mbeki didn't like commies and Mandela didn't appoint any as far as I know.

Not sure. Did he have to have been to design OBE? It's what I heard in an interview on 567/702. I was surprised as I also thought Asmal was the architect.

Def not Asmal's brain child. It was introduced (the idea at least) by Sibusiso Bengu as part of the then government's plan to change the education system.

He forced the merger between Unisa and TSA, which IMO was an fkup - lead to reduced competition and study fees increases.
