I've been looking for Kale since beginning this year, can't find it anywhere (or maybe they're labelled as a South African name for some reason?)

Do anyone know if this is seasonal at all or where to definitely get some?

I saw it earlier this week in F&V, labelled "Cale". CT.
First time I've seen it here.

It's normally packed next to the spinach. I've also seen it labelled as spinach, though with the word "kale" in brackets i.e. "Spinach (Kale)"

Necro because there's no reason to create a new thread on the same topic.

Is there a kale shortage? We've been looking at Woolies, Checkers, Spar and Pick 'n Pay since the previous payday, yet nobody has had it - only chard.

So, anyone know what the situation is?

The Pick 'n Pay in Midrand had quite a lot yesterday. Or just ask your local Porra mates, they usually have some growing in the garden -- essential for Caldo Verde.

I saw some at Pnp Norwood last Saturday. Didn’t check since.

Kale = Marrogo

Nope, not at all. Marogo is way better tasting than spinach, but not the same. I think it is also called boerenkool in Holland.

As for kale, plant it yourself. I planted 6 from seeds and can not keep up with them. Bought the seeds from Builders or something.

I need to make some again tonight.

So I made some Boerenkool (Mashed kale and potatoes) tonight. Quite enjoyed it. Basically diced potatoes and onions at the bottom of a pot. Cover with water and add some salt, pepper, whole mustard seed and a bay leaf. Then put chopped kale on top and bring to a boil. Once it starts boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes. Remove from heat , drain and then mash whats left in the pot. Add sour cream and or butter during the mashing process. I quite enjoyed the taste of the sour cream and mustard seeds with the crunchiness of kale in the mash. Kids ate it, but under protest. I loved it.
