my apt-get update ignores all the files.
apt-get install [anything] = unable to locate package
leafpad doesn't exist, neither does gedit.

I there a way to fix this? or is my install f*****

Surely it must have vim or nano, otherwise how else are you expected to write those L33t script kiddy penetration tests from hollywood?

i forgot to mention im root user if this changes anything

Thanks! Used this and managed to edit the list. Ran the update now apt-get install works!
as a rule of thumb always run:
apt update
then
apt upgrade

then
apt install

on a regular basis, ( weekly or whatever )
apt update & apt upgrade -y

Wants to run an elite (I can't even bring myself to use l33t anymore) hacker distro, but can't use a basic text editor...

Why not start from scratch and actually learn something while you're at it.

I'd recommend: http://linuxfromscratch.org/

OP, it's like buying a very expensive set of power tools without knowing how a hammer works. Lots of material online that you can read to get some idea, but please master the basics.

Before using Kali Linux, we always advise people to read this first. Kali is not intended for people who are new to Linux, its also not built for desktop use, it has a very specific purpose: http://docs.kali.org/introduction/should-i-use-kali-linux

The lite version of Kali is just a stripped down version without most of the tools. If you would like to install all the various tools, you can run the following command: apt-get install kali-linux-full
If you only want to install a smaller subset of the most common tools, you can run: apt-get install kali-linux

Woah...if you need Gedit to fix stuff in Linux you are going to have a bad time.

Try vim or nano instead.

And as said above this is not a daily use desktop OS.

It's very much built for purpose.

And if you think that it will make you a hacking god by pressing a few buttons you would be very wrong.

There are no special pen testing tools on Kali that aren't available to any other Linux distro. I blame Mr. Robot for it's sudden rise in infamy.
