Karen Willenberg is the Director of Regulatory and Legal Affairs at Mnet. Karen is an attorney by profession. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cape Town, majoring in Drama and English Literature and a Bachelor of Laws degree, also from UCT. Early in her career, Ms Willenberg specialised in entertainment and media law, representing South African and international clients in both litigious and commercial matters.
In 2004, she left private practise to join pay television operator, M-Net in the position of Director of Regulatory and Legal Affairs. While at M-Net, she has continued to attend to a range of commercial matters, but her primary focus has been broadcasting policy and regulation.
Recently, she has played a critical advisory role on issues related to digital migration. She holds a co-chairing position in the Ministerial Working Group on Digital Migration and has been appointed by the Minister of Communications to serve on the Digital Dzonga Advisory Council, tasked with overseeing the implementation of digital migration in South Africa.
Ms Willenberg continues to make a contribution to the broadcasting sector as part of the executive committee of the National Association of Broadcasters and in her capacity as Deputy Chairperson of the Advertising Standards Authority.
