Became a fan of his from The Ricky Gervais Podcast. Currently watching An Idiot Abroad and can't help but wonder whether he is just a creation, a character, of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant? I personally think that it's an act that he puts on. What do you think?

He might be real but definitely exaggerates it for the entertainment value. Going to try to get a hold of his books.

I love his stand up and some of the shows he made but some movies Ricky chose to act in sucked big time. Karl seems like a dense guy but that's what makes him funny too.

I've seen all of Gervais stand-up specials and wasn't really impressed. Prefer his TV and radio shows rather. Going to watch Stephen Merchant's stand-up later.

Ricky does not appeal to many like Steve Carrell does not appeal to many.

Yeah but being a fan of his TV/Radio work I was expecting myself to enjoy his standup. Perhaps it's Merchant's influence that I prefer, will let you know after I watch his.

Let's be honest here. There is a little exaggeration here. Listen to certain
serious interviews with Karl, and you'll hear that he's not as much of a
dumbass as he makes out to be.

Yes, the series is real, and he actually had to go through all that crap. But
he was really just playing for the cameras to make things look 10x worse
than they actually were.

If it was so terrible for him, why did he agree to a second season?

Alot of it does seem staged. Saw the first episode of An Idiot Abroad, do you think that needle really hit the cameraman accidentally? And that scene where as soon as they approached the Great Wall, the lady closes the curtain. Lots of other examples too. Seems too convenient. It's as real as any other "reality" show.

I love this guy!! (No Homo). He is really as dof as in the TV series An Idiot abroad and Ricky Gervais Show. Ricky just really knows what buttons to push to annoy him and asks ridiculous questions to confuse him and entertain us with ridiculous answers. He did an IQ test and got a result of 83 which is below the average of 100, but despite this his quite witty with his answers and thinking.

I don't think that he's an idiot. Infact you've got to be pretty smart to convince people that you're really so dumb.

They are busy with a new series now about a dwarf. Not really as funny as An Idiot Abroad.
