Do you believe in karma (or your own spiritual equivalent)? Do you believe you get what you give, even if its wees/months/years later?

Nope, not even remotely, aside from in a purely practical sense - Whereby people recognize your goodness, and respond accordingly.

It's clear that if karma exists, it's totally ****ed up, as a glance at the world and its history will show.

I believe in karma in a sense I suppose ...... even if nothing comes from it, it's nice to think that there's the off chance you will get back all that you put out.

I once gave 20 bucks to a homeless couple. They told me that their shack burned down and now they had nothing except a few items they managed to save. I had no reason to disbelieve them - they looked very distressed, and they produced a police affidavit which somewhat legitimised what they were saying. I was on the way to the movies with some friends, and I only had R60 on me, so I gave them R20. My friends told me off for giving homeless people money - they said the story was obviously fake. Heck, a construction worker who witnessed the whole thing said I was being stupid. But whatever, it felt nice to give them something, and they were genuinely grateful.

Fast-forward one month. I'm on holiday in Durban, and decide to watch a movie at Gateway. Instead of going up to the cinema floor on an escalator, for some unknown reason I decide to take the stairs. And lo and behold, what do I see lying on one of the steps? A R20 note. Exactly the amount of money I gave away, and on my way to the cinema as well!

However, I do not believe in karma. I guarantee this story to be 100% true, but in no way do I see it as an indication that karma exists. You have to put things in perspective. I've done plenty of good things that have gone unnoticed and unrewarded, and I've done plenty of bad things that have also gone unnoticed and unpunished. There have been great people throughout history who died in misery and poverty, while plenty of terrible people gained much wealth and power.

But the human mind is a pattern-seeking device. I experience an isolated incident like the one I mentioned above, and I naturally want to read some sort of significance into it. I don't want to brush it off as mere coincidence.

But then I realize that I really should have been payed back more than 20 bucks. I've given much more money away ;)

So you took R20 that belonged to someone else? You're just a thief.

I don't believe in karma because I'll do a good deed because I want to, not because I expect to be rewarded for it.

I look a mugabz and concur that karma cannot exist.

Innocent people are murdered, tortured, raped and killed, karma cannot exist.

It is just another comforting idea so people can pretend the world is fair.

Wife most definitely does. She also enters every competition she can find, at least 30 a week. She has won a lot of prizes, from a trip to the 1984 Olympics, a VW Golf, solar heater panel (we already had one), the lottery about 15 times (not huge sums) and says that her Karma contributes to this success, since if she didn't have this karma then she would not win.

Her idea of karma is also giving R5 to each and every beggar who calls, and being near the station, we get 15-20 a day. There is a bottle of coins near the door specially for this. She paid for a house for our housekeeper and pays for her children's education, so karma in this household does not come cheap

Haha! You're wife sounds awesome. I think I would get a boot to the butt if I tried that with my SO. He already calls me his 'most expensive hobby'.

In the true Buddhist sense, karma refers to results/consequences of one's actions either in your present life, or even in the context of a future rebirth.

So if it looks like some people "get away with murder" and does not get what they deserve (good OR bad), it may lie in wait for them in their next life.
