Is there anyone here who does karting?

Looking at getting into it but need as much info as possible, maybe visit during an event and having a look how it all works.

I was looking at doing the Rotax max challenge. I'm 24 so too old for the others haha.

Used to stay in Richards Bay and there was no kart track. Moved to pretoria now and zwartkops is right here so I'm seriously considering it

it's great fun, but when the bug bites - it gets expensive!!

in the 70's we started out with a 2nd hand kart. was known as a ZIP MIRAGE with a 100cc stock MaCallough chainsaw motor - chain drive 10-54 to rear axle and 1 disk brake. running on methonal & castrol M.

we had a lot of fun and won lots of cups including the BP 4hr endurance race held at Killarney's main track in 1976. that's the big cup in the center.

we also took part in the SA championship in PE that year. I have a photos of that week end, but I have resize them first.

then in the early 90's I got involved with an ex army mate and his 125cc gearbox kart.

he was an ex JHB motorX champ so he took to karting like a fish to water and won everything in his class

regrettably due to financial constraints and track politics he eventually stopped karting after 3yrs.

so best you decide what you want out of the sport? a bit of fun on a Saturday or some serious expensive competitive stuff? bear in mind in the early days there was no such thing as sponsorship! you paid for everything out your pocket!

Well I'm looking at fun first and foremost. Not gonna put my expectations so high that I know I probably won't reach on my first years.

But when I do feel I can be competitive then I will invest more and look for sponsorships.

This sounds interesting... I was looking into SuperHatch that they race at zwartskop. Will have to go and see what it's like.

yeah I'm planning on a trip to zwartkops soon, preferably when there's karting on. The other formulas look interesting like the Formula M, but I can't shake karting lol

I'm trying to organise a practice session with Ed Murray, possibly an hour session just to get a basic feel for karting.

Taking my friend with so just trying to work out a day where we're both free first. Its either this Saturday or next week Thursday.

My birthday next week Thursday so I think it'll make it an awesome day :P

I'm assuming there's something on this weekend so I will have to check the schedule.

Cars in the Park is this weekend, so the venue is probably well occupied.
