When I was still young, naïve and beautiful, I got a chess computer one Christmas. This little machine has recently surfaced again, but it is missing a bunch of itty bitty pieces. It was pretty cool if I remember correctly, and I would like to fire it up and play with it again, even if it is for novelty's sake. Any suggestions on where to find these? Could I take the ones I have to a 3d printing place and ask for them to be "copied"?

AA battery for scale.

I have the more advanced one where you press down on a piece to activate it. its a huge bord.

Technically that one would work with any chess pieces, right? Mine has these little pin bases that you also press down to "select" and play.

just check if the pin has a magnet on. if not try softly sticking something in the hole and see if there is a mechanical switch in there. that reads the piece

No magnet, all mechanical. The pieces are 100% plastic. Just looking for replacements for the missing ones.

Don't see any files on the 3d printing sites for this model, so its probably going to cost a bit if a place have to scan and print for you.
Maybe cheaper to just buy a secondhand set on ebay

Can the be scanned somehow?
yeah, but its a mission and expensive as far as Im aware. Ill ask on our local 3D printing group. May I use your picture to give them an idea of the size etc?

Plan Z go buy a cheap Chinese chess set and just glue the pins on.....

I have still have mine,, tried it this year for the first time in about 20 years and got a hiding.

3d printing is a good idea.

I really wanted one of these, but they cost something like R2000 back then.

I'm pretty sure that's not an AA battery though

The best solution here is to design the part and have it 3D printed. This is quite straightforward to do, would probably be a day's work

First of all that's not an AA battery. That's a 18650 Lithium
Second of all, we had one of those in the family. It was pretty good. My brother has it at the moment.
Cost a mint back in the day.

Thanks for the clarity on the battery - missing the point as it is pretty much identical in dimensions to a real AA battery, or would only certain brands be accepted? This was a more reliable indicator of scale than what the typical banana would have been.

It was said in jest. Jeesuz, it was a joke FFS
