Kaspersky Mobile Security 8 is an impressive mobile security suite that offers a range of interesting features and virus protection.
It seems that more and more software security vendors are developing mobile antivirus applications for the likes of Windows Mobile and the Symbian operating systems. Kaspersky’s PC software has impressed us somewhat, and we were keen to see what its mobile offering is capable of. Interestingly, Mobile Security 8 does more than merely scan for viruses or block intrusions with its firewall. The software also offers a few options for finding your lost phone, or wiping all the data remotely should your phone be stolen.
The former requires GPS connectivity, and all you need to do is send a keyword to your device and it will then reply with a link to the phone’s coordinates on Google Maps. Should the phone be stolen, you can also send a keyword to your device to wipe all the data.
Our favourite feature by far is the SIM-watch module. This feature activates when the SIM card is swapped in your stolen phone. A secret message will be sent to you, providing you with the new cellphone number. This is handy, because you can then wipe your data remotely, lock the phone, or track it via GPS. In today’s MXit society, parents can also use Mobile Security 8 to restrict the sending and receiving of messages to their kid’s phone. Even better, parents can create white lists, which will allow a child’s phone to only receive calls or messages from certain numbers. Overall, this is a solid mobile application that offers more than the average mobile security suite.
