Hey All! Probably a stupid question.... but hoping to find out anyway before I go see them this afternoon.

If I send a car to the panel beaters and they have to replace a part (part in question is side bull bar step), do they get to keep the damaged part? Or could I ask to keep it? The thing is that the current bull bar step is only slightly damaged, though the insurance is going to replace it anyway so I want to keep the slightly damaged one. (They only come in sets so I could possibly sell the old set for some extra cash).

Well, its your property so just tell them you'd like it back once they've replaced it

One would think so yes... though worried about that fine print under page 3 paragraph 8 section 4 subsection 3.2 that states they get to do whatever they want  Just hoping someone had some firsthand experience so I know for sure in case I have to make a scene :D

technically it belongs to the insurance company once they replce it

Last time I had work done through the insurance the panel shop put the old parts in the boot and then when I collected the car they went through the repair with me and showed me the replaced parts and asked if I wanted them or if they should scrap them.

I wouldn't be shocked if a panel shop refused to return them though. But kick up a fuss, threaten to complain to your insurance. The insurance can easily stop sending work their way if they don't please the customer and they know this.

I work in panel beating and we scrap most of the stuff. However if the customer asks for it then they might be willing to give it.

Just so you know some insurance copanies actually are so stingy with the quotes that the panel beaters usually prefer to keep the old metal for scrap as a extra income. That said it won't hurt to ask them.

Once Insurance has paid to have your car fixed the parts are actually the insurers.

Under the CPA we are supposed to even return old spark plugs and filters if the customer wants them. I'm pretty sure they have to give it to you if you ask for it.

unless its an insurance job, because then they have to give it to the insurers

but mostly, they dump it so it cant hurt asking for it
i still have a headlamp lying around from SO's car somewhere
