Keeping iOS app purchases on a seperate drive

Hi Everyone,

I managed to do a backup of my iPad 3 prior to upgrade to the Vista-like iOS7. I did it creating a symbolic link to an external drive for the backup directory. However doing the same for Mobile Applications, does not work. The iTunes-connected-iPad does not seem to copy files to that location, or anywhere else. Has anyone here got it right? (Yes you can move the entire iTunes directory to a separate disk, but I was hoping to just keep the .ipa files separately.) I have about 30GB of iOS apps and I don't wish to waste that space on my rMBP's SSD.

I have my Macbook Air setup with a separate drive connected that houses all my iTunes content (music, apps, movies ect). The Mobile Applications Folder should be in your iTunes folder and if you have set iTunes up to load and save to your external drive then that is where it will save to.

I just downloaded a new app now to test and it saved to Mobile Applications folder on my external drive. Are you 100% sure iTunes is setup correctly to save everything new and read from your external drive?

I just started copying my iTunes folder to an external HD when my MBA's display went completely dead! It's off and won't turn back on! Any ideas?

EDIT: Got it to restart by pressing shift, alt, control and power button!

I've managed to move the mobile applications folder on Windows using a similar symlink trick. I did try using the settings in iTunes to change the folder. It worked fine for existing apps, but any new apps iTunes would still download to the default location so I gave up on that and went with the symlink.

On Windows ..... but not Mt Lion. I must try harder. Too busy and lazy too atm.
