So...as you guys might know..I have been complaining like a toddler about my "push" that is not working. Emails and WhatsApp constantly delayed by 30 minutes etc etc. I have checked under my "running services" and Cloud To Device is running in there. To rule out my network connection from my phone to my provider...I was thinking of installing some kind of app that would send a ping or something every minute or so to make sure that my network provider does not put my data connection to sleep after inactivity on my phone.

Is there such a app????? Have any of you guys used something like this? What do you think it will do to my battery life?

Do network providers close data connections after inactivity? Really?

I dont know. I want to rule it out. My "E" sign is always there after I wake up my phone...but for all I know Cell C might have put the connection to sleep...therefore the google C2DM server might not be able to get my push notification through and therefore my stuff is so hectically delayed. That is why I think my WhatsApp messages normally only comes through after I start using the phone again. This is just a theory though...and I want to put it to the test....but not sure how to go about it.

You're probably on Cell C, right?

Everybody on Cell C have the same issue. My Cell C whatsapp contacts always show that the last time online was anything between say 1 - 30 minutes. Luckily I'm on MTN ;)

Edit: Vodacom and MTN work just fine.

Yes I am on Cell C....so you think it is they that is putting my connection to sleep therefore basically making Push to my device impossible?

Sigh...now I must test it with a Vodacom sim I guess...not a problem...but I dont know how to do the setting manually anymore! DAMN DAMN DAMN!

I have no idea what the technical reason for this might be, but I can assure you that every single person I know who's on Cell C have the same issue. This is the reason my brother and sister never really completely switched from sms to Whatsapp - it's just too unreliable for them. So there is really no need for you to test it.

How do we go about reporting this to the right people at Cell C? Maybe you can drop the Cell C rep a PM and get this thread moved to the Cell C section.

Yup, it's true, CellC does put your connection to sleep after a while. Even though it stays 'connected', no data gets sent through. I often have to disable/re-enable my data connection to get it to work again. It's really quite a pain, especially for IM and push notifications.

One thing you could toggle is the "Enable always-on mobile data" option in Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks. I haven't tried it myself, but it *should* prevent the connection idling, since the device is reconnecting every time it needs a connection. The downside is you won't receive push notifications at all, which is kinda the point of this thread.

I will see if I can test it with a Vodacom sim....and if it works fine there then I will most certainly raise this issue with the Cell_C rep. I have dealt with him before.

Thanks for telling me this Viva. God help Cell C if this is the case. I will make a groot stink!

No problem :)
Keep us updated on this issue - I too would love to get this problem solved.

I also experience this on cell c... My gmail is sometimes delayed by an hour. No problem on vc though.

mmmm this is smelling more and more like rotten tuna by the second!!!!!!! Can everyone that is on Cell C that is having this kind of issue on their Droids please post here so that we can get the ball rolling on this. I am tired of having a phone that punts push as a service only to have it nullified by our provider! *grunts*

I have a Nokia and my Push service works fine on CellC to be honest :)

Do you use Whatsapp? It might be (depends on how attentive you are) that it's hard to notice. Whatapp really makes it obvious whether or not push works properly.

Nokia dont push...it pulls! hehehe.

Thanks for that app tera. Thing with that one is that it pings like a SOB. It will run my battery to the ground in no time flat I am sure. I think I need a app that pings like every 2 minutes. I will search and see if I can find anything. This problem has beeing ongoing since I ported to Cell C on the Defy and frankly I am freaking sick and tired of it now. TIRED I TELL YOU!!!!

I'm on Virgin Mobile (so basically Cell C) and my Gmail seems to work perfectly but whatsapp is horrifically unreliable (unless im connected with wifi then its 100% reliable). As soon as i restart my network connection my whatsapp messages come through. So its definitely a Cell C issue.

I don't experience any delays on Whatsapp or Gmail - sometimes my phone will "beep" before I see an update on my PC Gmail.

Over the past weekend I added 4 new friends to Whatsapp and everyone tested instantly - ported to Cell C 3 months ago

Not only CellC it seems - I'm on a BB, with VC & if I try & wite a few lines reply here; I'm asksed to re login by MyBB.
Not sure if it's VC or MyBB.
So, anyway that's why I cannot contribute much in form of discussions on interesting threads!

Right I have just confirmed it. It is definitely a Cell C problem. I have been testing my push services on my Motorola Defy now with a Vodacom sim since this morning and it is working 100%. WhatsApp messages are instant and my Gmail comes through withing in 1 - 3 seconds.

I will be creating a thread about this Cell C problem in the Cell C forum.

I hope that all of you that have been having the same issues on the Cell C network using Android phones will support me in this.

Glad you can confirm. I'd just like to point out that the issue doesn't seem to be limited to Android phones. I can confirm that it's also an issue on several different Nokia phones.
