Keyboard advice, mechanical worth the hype?

I phoned everywhere and it doesn't look like anyone in Durban has them that you can try out. I had to order it online.

Luckily I work from home, so that isn't a problem for me, but if I took this to the office I'd soon be eating mechanical keys for tea.

But yes, it's awesome coding on a mechanical keyboard. I have a Razer BW Ultimate, but since I've bought it, it's jumped out of your budget I think.

Doing Skype calls while typing is cool too. Because everyone on the other side of the call can hear the [-]machinegun[/-] keyboard.

Corsair K95 will be out soon but it is going to be more expensive. If you convert the $ k90 price vs the $ k95 price its going to be closer to R1800 :wtf:

Besides for that it is absolutely massive with all those 'gaming' keys and it uses Mx - Red keys which are not tactile. Looks great though..
 
Thanks for all the input guys, either looking at cm quickfire fx/pro blue/grey/red switches, cm trigger blue/grey or wait for Roccat Ryos. I still can't quite get past the no directional keys on the cm quickfire fx though.

Steelseries 6Gv2 or 7G has directional keys.

Yeah, typing/coding will be very important on this keyboard unfortunately.

Do you like the tactile feedback keys? Or do you prefer red? I did some reading and it seams the brown ones are pretty nice. Also if I use a mechanical keyboard at home will it make coding at university with membrane keyboards an issue?

Definitely prefer the tactile feedback, I think most people would. Blues for me are the best, prefer their slightly higher resistance than browns and the sound isn't an issue, I love slamming away on them. Browns are a little lighter to press which could translate to making more errors, they're also without the blues' sound. Blues and browns are both excellent and would be my first recommendation. Benefit of browns is that they are quieter than the blues with a similar feeling, with the only sound being that of bottoming out. Bottoming out sound across all keyboards/switches is similar.

I hate using rubber domes now, my friends with rubber domes at work say the same... So be warned. :D

Dont let it perturb too much as it does have directional keys OR numpad.
 
Corsair C70 just released. Looks really nice. Cherry Mx Red.
 
Thanks, wish they would have a black one with blue back lighting. Anyone know if cherry reds are nice or are mechanical keys not worth it unless you go blue or brown?

Reds have no feedback and no click. I haven't tried them but have read that if you are typing they are easy to make mistakes on as you can't tell when they actuate.

Go for blues.

Don't you find them too loud or to hard to press? I've never used any mechanical keyboards before so I just want more views on blue vs brown.

My GF constantly complains about the tactile feedback that my kb gives, it is loud, you get used to it. I actually like it infact. It's all a matter of taste tbh. test out a few then buy.

Mechs are great for anything. Whenever i use a membrane keyboard I feel really **** about myself. Seriously mech is the way. I am so lucky that I got my Razer BW Ultimate before the prices skyrocketed (they are R1900 now, i got mine for R1200).
