If I understand correctly, you want to maximise all 20 windows in an app, with one click. Holding down the OPTION/ALT button and clicking on the green plus sign does this for me.
You did understand me correctly - it was me that missed what you said! Your comes closest to actually working. It's a bit inconsistent in some applications, but works flawlessly in others -- so will hit a reboot, and see what happens.

BTW - same query across three forums - you were the first with an actual answer! And now I'm going to go and dig a bit through long-since looked at books, because I'm sure I've read that suggestion before - but it was long forgotten.

Not Mac related but I really dig the Windows key + arrow to adjust the position of the window you're working on.
Win 7 or 8 (or both?)?

you can do the same for mac ... (windows + Arrow) - Requires a app though ... (as does everything apple related)
its called "BetterSnapTool" and you can customize shortcut keys .. so on my mac , the mac key + arrow button do the same thing as windows key + arrow
