New Kia Sedan for SA

After Stinger, comes Pegas, to continue Kia's sedan presence.

Although the trend towards crossovers has mostly diluted the traditional compact sedan’s marketability, Kia is planning to bring a new one to South Africa.

The company’s current product portfolio is a collection of hatches (Picanto/Rio), SUVs (Seltos, Sportage, Sorento), a crossover (Sonet), huge MPV (Grand Sedona) and the K2700 bakkie. No sedans, but that is set to change. Soon.

Despite most brands gravitating towards a similar model mix as Kia, without a compact sedan, the Korean is going slightly contrarian, with its Pegas, scheduled to be introduced to the local market next month.

It’s not the most elegant or contemporary of Kias, in terms of exterior design, nor is it intended to be. The tiny 14-inch wheels tell you all there is to know about this sedan’s purpose as a fleet or ride-hailing service vehicle.

This is a compact sedan targeted at emerging markets, instead of Europe. This should make it ideal for local buyers who need the safe lockable storage space, of a boot, as opposed to a hatchback, with its glass window above the luggage area.

The Pegas isn’t a new vehicle, for Kia. It debuted back in 2017, at the Shanghai auto show, and shared its platform is related to the previous-generation Soul.

What a horrid machine... Peg-ass, more like it.

Kia Pegas compact sedan here soon: SA details confirmed

Kia South Africa has confirmed that it plans to launch a new compact sedan called the Pegas around mid-June.

Although pricing has yet to be released, our contact at Kia SA says the Pegas will be positioned between the Picanto and Rio, but priced closer to the former. For reference, the Kia Rio currently starts at R280 995, while the Picanto is priced between R187 995 and R251 995.

The Kia spokesperson also emphasised that contrary to other news reports, the focus will not be on ride-sharing fleets, but rather on young families. The key selling point here, apart from a high-value price tag, is the rather generous 475 litre boot capacity.

We also have confirmation that local Kia Pegas models will be powered by a 1,4-litre normally aspirated petrol engine that produces 69 kW and 132 N.m. Overseas models are offered with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox and that’s likely to be the case in South Africa too.

I think they accidently a letter in the name.

4-speed automatic. Are we stuck in the 1970s here?

No doubt, it will shortly be followed in SA by the launch of Kia's sister company '4-letter nomenclature' badged stablemate, the Hyundai Aura - an even more ugly & hideous '3-box sedan' conversion of the Grand i10 Neo hatchback... they may as well have badged this abomination as the Hyundai 'T U R D'...

Kia Pegas compact sedan has arrived: SA prices and specs

With the launch of the Kia Pegas in South Africa this week, the Korean carmaker once again has a compact sedan offering in the country. Kia vacated this segment when the sedan version of the previous Rio was not replaced in the new-generation range, but despite being almost as large as the previous saloon, the Pegas is actually priced well below the Rio hatchback, which currently starts at R280 995.

The Kia Pegas 1,4 LX base model is priced at just R225 995, while the more luxurious 1,4 EX can be had for R236 995 in manual guise and R251 995 as an auto.

The compact sedan is powered by a tried and tested 1,4-litre normally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 69 kW and 132 N.m. It can be paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

Despite the relatively modest asking price, the Kia Pegas 1,4 LX entry model is actually quite generously appointed, with standard features including a 7,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with six speakers and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The LX is also fitted with a reverse camera, automatic headlight activation, steering-mounted audio controls, electric windows (front and rear), dual front airbags, ABS and ISOFIX child-seat anchors.

Is this based on the Rio? Prices actually aren't that bad if so.
