Kia Sonet

I have had my Sonet since Dec 2021 using wireless Carplay daily from my iPhone 12.

What I have seen is that there are spots while driving where my phone drops the network which then results in the phone and the Kia dropping connection giving a black screen.
Once such area is the N1 outgoing past Century City just before the N7 offramp. Every single time I go past there Carplay gives a black screen at the exact same spot.

Just check that it is not a network connection issue with your phone as that translates to the black screen on the Kia.

I thought so as well, but if i try and go back into carplay, it says "Phone not responding, please reconnect it and try again'. no matter what i do, switch radio off, disconnect phone and try and connect, nothing will work sadly.

I have a 2021 Kia sonet EX CVT and one of my gripes is that it doesn't have cruise control. I have seen video's of people in india adding cruise control to these cars by replacing the steering wheel buttons. Does anyone know where in south Africa i could have this done, if at all.

I installed cruise control on my wife's Rio in 2015. I asked Kia SA about it and they quoted me R7500 to an aftermarket unit. Decided to do some research and found a link to eBay (I think) on a UK Kia forum. Imported the 3 switches for the steering wheel from Korea. Came in the factory packaging. Landed cost was R980.
If I recall, you had to verify that the steering wheel slip ring was the correct one. Unfortunately the only advice I can give you in this regard.

PS. I won't bother looking for cruise control for her Sonet because I was the only one to use it in the Rio.

Kia Sonet facelift revealed in India ahead of 2024 launch

One of South Africa’s best-selling compact SUVs, the Kia Sonet is getting a refresh for 2024 to keep it on top of its game.

The facelifted model has just been revealed in India, where it’s built, ahead of going on sale there in February 2024, but there’s no word yet on when it will reach South African shores.

The SUV has been redesigned at both ends, with the front receiving new LED headlights surrounded by clamp shaped DRLs that run into the widened grille. Essentially it has taken a leaf out of Kia’s new “Opposites United” design book while still remaining recognisable as a Sonet.

At the back the Kia Sonet gets a complete refresh, with new vertical taillights connected by a horizontal bar, because according to nearly all modern car designers, taillights need to be connected. Not that we’re complaining.

New 16-inch “crystal cut” alloy wheels round off the exterior design changes and the new model is available with three design packages: GT-Line, X-Line and Tech-Line.

2024 Kia Sonet Facelift Review - Team-BHP

The sub-4m crossover (C1) segment has some of the best-selling cars in India. Cars like the Maruti Brezza & Fronx, Hyundai Exter & Venue and Tata Nexon & Punch are the strongest players in the segment.

Kia's offering in this segment is the Sonet, which was introduced in 2020. It has been a consistent performer and with the 2024 facelift, Kia has made it more appealing by adding many new features to it.

This is the first facelift that the Sonet has received since its launch in 2020. But then, it was always a mechanically sound car with lots of engine & transmission options and loaded with features.

The latest updates keep it up-to-date and attractive for customers. Among the updates are some cosmetic changes and feature additions, the most significant being ADAS Level 1.

As before, the Sonet comes with 3 engine options – an 82 BHP, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 118 BHP, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 114 BHP, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel.

You get a 5-speed manual transmission with the 1.2 NA petrol engine. The 1.0 turbo-petrol can be had with a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT automatic. Lastly, the 1.5 diesel engine gets a 6-speed MT, 6-speed iMT and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

In total, there are 3 engine options, 3 types of manual transmissions, and 2 types of automatic gearboxes on offer. The car is available in 7 variants, 8 monotone body colours, 2 dual-tone colours, 1 matte finish colour, 5 interior themes, and 4 wheel designs.

Kia Sonet (2024) Living with it

Verdict

Comfortable, efficient, stylish and backed with a strong warranty, the Kia Sonet is an attractive option in the congested small crossover/compact family car segment. There is nothing inherently flawed about the car (except, perhaps, the single-piece folding rear seat); most of our criticisms are merely spec-related.

Still, the competition in this segment is fierce and, if Kia wants a bigger slice of the action, it would be well-advised to ramp up the showroom appeal of its LX trim grade. There’s a facelifted version of the Sonet on the way – wouldn’t that be the perfect opportunity to pack more value into the package?
