Kia Sonet

Kia Sonet: Coming to SA in 2020

Kia has released an official rendering of its compact SUV, called the Sonet. Here are some details, plus some SA details including a potential arrival date.

The first image of the production-spec Kia Sonet has been revealed and it gives us some idea of what the compact newcomer will offer. Kia is already on a good run with its Seltos, which is one of the more interesting-looking vehicles in the segment. The Sonet is set to be officially revealed (in the metal) on 7th August 2020.

Kia says its new Sonet "aims to set new design benchmarks and inject a new dynamism in the compact SUV segment when it is revealed later this summer." Based on the funky-looking Kia Sonet Concept which was revealed earlier in 2020, the production model Sonet will be the Korean brand's second vehicle to come from its plant in India and is aimed at the global market.

New Kia Sonet revealed! Baby crossover locked in for SA launch

Kia has officially taken the wraps off its new Sonet, with the fresh-faced baby crossover scheduled to launch in South Africa before the end of 2020.

Like the Seltos, the new Sonet will be imported to South Africa from India.

In that market, the Sonet will be offered with a range of powertrain choices. In fact, there will be a brace of petrol engines (a naturally aspirated 1,2-litre, four-cylinder unit and a more powerful, turbocharged 1,0 T-GDi mill) as well as a 1,5-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine.

In India, transmission choices will include conventional five- and six-speed manuals, a seven-speed dual-clutch item, a six-speed automatic gearbox and a six-speed “intelligent” manual transmission without a clutch pedal (as already offered in India by the closely related Hyundai Venue).

Kia Motors South Africa says more information about SA-spec powertrain and transmission options “will be released closer to the local launch date”.

Kia Sonet (2020) International Launch Review

Final thoughts

The Sonet has a lot to offer compact family-car buyers and not just in terms of a long list of features or a wide variety of engine choices, but with the kind of vehicle Kia's newcomer is. It's nice to drive, looks decent and, if you're looking for an alternative to a compact hatchback, the fashionable Sonet is unlikely to disappoint. Then there are features usually associated with more expensive cars, such as the Bose audio, ventilated seats, a large touchscreen infotainment system, or even connected-car tech and the ability to control certain features of the car with voice commands.

On the downside, the Sonet isn’t particularly spacious – and that isn't because of poor packaging, it's just a purposely compact offering. A good alternative to the top-spec Sonet might be a lower-spec derivative of the Seltos, for example. The latter has much more space, a punchier motor and, if you can live without some high-end features, it arguably represents better value-for-money. We’ll come back to comparisons with the Kia’s rivals once the prices and specs of the South African-market model have been announced. Until that happens, is it worth waiting for the Sonet?

The answer to that is a resounding yes. It might not be as ahead of its time as the Matra Rancho, but it will be a solid choice in the segment.

Kia Sonet : Official Review - Team-BHP

The Kia Sonet is on sale in India at a price of between Rs. 6.71 - 12.89 lakhs.

What you'll like:

• A mini-Seltos in almost every way! Same formula, in a smaller package
• Sharp & handsome styling. In our opinion, this is the best-looking Compact SUV
• Excellent spread of powertrains including a fast & enjoyable turbo-petrol
• Diesel AT is fantastic; the only smooth torque-converter gearbox in a sea of AMTs

• Well-tuned suspension offers a good balance between ride & handling. 205 mm GC too
Top safety package includes 6 airbags, ESP, HSA, TPMS etc.
• Very enjoyable 7-speaker Bose sound system
• Impressive kit (ventilated seats, sunroof, auto LED headlamps, cruise control, wireless charger)

What you won't:

• Rear seat legroom is just adequate, while its limited width makes the Sonet a 4-seater
• Top variants are pricey! More expensive than its sibling, the Hyundai Venue too
• Some misses ( 60:40 rear seat split, auto wipers, steering reach adjustment, illuminated window buttons, full-size spare tyre on top trims…)
• Dual-clutch ATs (like the Petrol DCT) have a history of poor reliability in India
• As always with Kia, the variant spread is tough to figure out. Good luck finding your perfect Sonet!
• The tasty 1.0L turbo-petrol doesn’t come with a manual gearbox. Venue has that option
• Waiting periods are already a couple of months long for some trims

The Sonet diesel is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged engine. It's available in two states of tune - 99 BHP / 240 Nm with a fixed geometry turbocharger, and 113 BHP / 250 Nm with a variable geometry turbocharger.

Here’s what Kia is bringing to South Africa in the first half of 2021

Kia Motors South Africa has confirmed which vehicles it plans to launch locally in the first half of 2021.

The Korean firm’s local division says it will kick off the new year with the arrival of the facelifted Picanto in January. As a reminder, a refreshed version of the little city car was revealed in May 2020. The following month, Kia SA said it was considering including new GT-Line and X-Line variants in the local line-up.

In March, the new, fourth-generation Sorento is expected to hit local roads. However, the engine range for South Africa has yet to be confirmed.

The Indian-built Sonet – which is about the size of its Hyundai Venue sister vehicle – is scheduled to arrive in SA in April, with the small newcomer slotting into Kia’s crossover range below the already popular Seltos. Kia SA says more information about SA-spec powertrain and transmission options “will be released closer to the local launch date”.

8 compact (and likely affordable) SUVs to look forward to in 2021

Vehicle buyers in South Africa and around the world have spoken. They want SUVs. More and more SUVs. Big ones, small ones, and everything in between.

Yet while those seeking medium and large SUVs have been well catered for in recent years, most car manufacturers, with a few exceptions, have neglected the more affordable end of the market.

But that is changing rapidly, and in 2021 it’s literally going to be raining small, affordable SUVs, with at least eight new entrants confirmed for South African launch during the year, and perhaps a few others set to follow too.

We don’t know how much these new entrants will cost, but we strongly suspect that many of them will have starting prices of below R300 000.

Let’s take a look at what’s coming up in 2021:

Kia Sonet

Mitsubishi XPander Cross

Nissan Magnite

Opel Crossland facelift

Peugeot 2008

Renault Kiger

Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Toyota Urban Cruiser

Compact Crossover Craze in SA for 2021

The demand for compact crossovers is rising in South Africa and car manufacturers are looking to meet strong demand with a host of new compact crossovers that are expected to be introduced on local soil in the coming weeks and months.

The compact crossover segment is flourishing in South Africa and it’s no surprise that the segment is growing at a phenomenal rate. Buyers in this segment are absolutely spoilt for choice!

Established products in this segment such as the Ford Ecosport, Honda BR-V, Haval H2, Hyundai Venue, Peugeot 2008 and Volkswagen T-Cross, for example, will now be under pressure as newer and less expensive products are due to arrive on local soil soon.

Recently, South Africa saw the introduction of the Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Toyota Urban Cruiser which are the result of a collaboration between the 2 Japanese automakers. However, the segment is due to grow even further in the near future as other brands seek to woo local buyers with their new wares.

Kia Sonet (2021) Specs & Price

Kia has an all-new model joining the ever-expanding compact family car segment. The Sonet has just landed in SA and here's what's inside and how much it costs.

The Kia Sonet is an Indian-built compact family SUV in the same vein as the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite. All of which have or will hit the South African market in 2021. The key to this segment is pricing, with all vehicles managing to arrive in some form at under R300k.

The Sonet is built on the same platform as the Hyundai Venue but at a different plant in Bangalore, it's the same plant that builds the popular Kia Seltos for South Africa.

Kia Sonet local lineup

The Sonet will initially arrive in 2 trim levels, an LX entry model and an EX model which has more premium equipment levels and additional exterior details. Both variants are powered by the same engine.

In terms of size, the Sonet comes in at 4 120 mm long, 1 790 mm wide, 1 610 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2 500 mm. The Sonet stands shorter in height than the other 2 models by 30 mm. The boot on the Sonet is also considerably larger at a claimed 392 litres versus the 328 litres of the Urban Cruiser and Vitara Brezza.

Kia Sonet engine details

As of the local launch (May 2021), the Kia Sonet will only be available with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The engine can be specced in either a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox. The unit produces 85 kW and 144 Nm of torque with a claimed zero to 100 kph time of 11.3 seconds for the manual and 11.8 seconds for the CVT.

Kia South Africa has noted that a 1.0-litre turbopetrol model will be available towards the end of 2021.

How much does the Kia Sonet cost in South Africa?
