Kia Syros

2025 Kia Syros Review - Team-BHP

Kia Syros Pros
• A well-engineered all-rounder with lots of tricks up its sleeve
• Radical styling makes it stand out in a crowd
• Has a sturdy build and excellent fit & finish
• Available with turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines, both offering optional ATs
• Mature on-road behaviour, including at highway speeds. Good brakes as well
• Excellent use of interior space with comfortable seating for 4 adults and useful storage areas. Rear seat space is fantastic! Healthy 390-465 litres of boot space
• Loaded to the gills with features such as the panoramic sunroof, 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, sliding & reclining rear seats, ventilated front & rear seats, sunshades, driving & traction modes, paddle shifters, 30-inch (!!!) trinity panoramic display panel, all windows up/down through smart-key, remote engine start, electronic parking brake with auto hold, extendable sun-visors, air purifier, 360-degree camera, dashcam with dual camera and more
• Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ADAS Level 2, ESC, HSA, 360-degree camera, TPMS etc.

Kia Syros Cons
• Funky styling isn't to everyone's taste. You'll either love it or hate it
• Firm suspension. Liveable, but bad roads will bother you (especially on 17" wheel variants)
• Back seat's width makes it better for 2 adults and a kid, rather than 3 adults
• Dual-clutch ATs (like the Petrol DCT) have a history of poor reliability in India
• Buzz felt on idling in the cabin (1.5L diesel). Diesel’s engine noise could be better controlled too
• Output from the Harman-Kardon sound system is just average
• Have to mention the misses (thinner spare tyre on top trims, rain-sensing wipers…)
• Cheaper & simpler 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol isn’t on offer (nor is its butter-smooth CVT)

The Syros diesel draws power from a 1.5L, 4-cylinder CRDi engine with a variable turbocharger. The motor produces 114 BHP (@ 4,000 rpm) & 250 Nm (@ 1,500-2,750 rpm). The engine is mated to a 6-speed torque converter AT. The outright performance of the Syros diesel is enough to keep most drivers happy.

New Kia Syros to offer multiple powertrain options in SA?

The new Kia Syros is scheduled to launch in South Africa in 2026, with the brand’s local boss suggesting petrol, diesel and fully electric powertrains could be on offer…

- New Syros scheduled to launch in SA in 2026
- Petrol, diesel and EV powertrains mentioned
- Syros set to slot in between Sonet and Seltos

The new Kia Syros is expected to launch in South Africa in the latter part of 2026, with the South Korean brand’s local CEO suggesting petrol, diesel and fully electric powertrains could all be on offer.

Paul Turnbull, Chief Executive Officer of Kia South Africa since July 2024, was speaking during an interview conducted in Cars.co.za’s custom-built podcast booth at Naamsa’s recent South African Auto Week 2025 in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

“The [model] that hasn’t been spoken about a lot but is actually quite interesting is the Syros,” Turnbull said, adding this boxy model would be sourced from India and confirming it would be positioned between the likewise Anantapur-built Sonet and Seltos.

“The Syros almost looks a little bit like the old Kia Soul – it’s quite a retro, funky car. Interestingly on that car, we can get petrol, EV and diesel. And it’s going to be not entry-level but [still] sub-R500 000. So, it will be the first car we’re going to have petrol, diesel and EV on offer,” Turnbull told us.

Kia Syros is now available in a new feature-loaded HTK (EX) variant. It is available in petrol and diesel versions, priced at Rs 9.89 lakh and Rs 10.64 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new HTK (EX) variant is based on the HTK (O) variant. It comes equipped with LED headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Syros HTK (EX) trim gets an electric sunroof, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. The safety package includes ABS with EBD, ESC, Hill Start Assist, 6 airbags and Vehicle Stability Management.

The Syros is available with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 118 BHP and 172 Nm, and a 1.5-litre diesel that makes 114 BHP and 250 Nm. The petrol engine is offered with a choice of a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT, while the diesel engine comes with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

2026 Kia Syros EV Review - Team-BHP

Kia Syros EV Pros

• A well-engineered product, good build quality and consistent fit & finish
• 169 BHP motor is enjoyable to drive and nicely tuned
• Mature on-road behaviour at urban and highway speeds
• Excellent cabin packaging (with some EV-specific tweaks) retains the space & ergonomics of the ICE sibling
• Comfortable seating for 4 adults & useful storage areas. Rear seat space is fantastic! Healthy 390-465 litres of boot space
• Unladen ground clearance of 197 mm with short front + rear overhangs - unpredictable Indian roads are no problem for this EV
Feature-loaded with a panoramic sunroof, 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, sliding & reclining rear seats, ventilated front & rear seats, rear window sunshades, internal V2L 250V/16A 3-pin plug point, one-touch up/down for all windows, etc.
• EV-specific additions like one-pedal driving, ADAS-based Smart Recuperation and smartphone digital key are pretty useful

Kia Syros EV Cons

• Unconventional styling carried over from its ICE sibling (minimal changes). Continues to be a love it or hate it design
• Optimistic pricing for the higher variants, too close to the segment above
• Some features such as ADAS, V2L & Digital Key are exclusive to the X-Line variant. These should have been there on the HTX+ trim level
• The larger 17-inch alloy wheels (higher trims) carry forward the underlying firm ride quality of the Syros
• Back seat's width makes it better for 2 adults and a kid, rather than 3 adults
• Spare tyre is a 125 section donut wheel on the EV (Vs. a 195 section regular tyre on the ICE). Also misses out on rain-sensing wipers
• Wind noise is noticeable in the cabin even at merely 80 - 90 km/h
