Kickstarter project to bring NFC to iOS

Another Kickstarter project with a solution in search of a problem

Really, who needs its, and if you have to plug it in when you are going to use it then it's never gonna catch on.

Well agreed for a different reason

I dont see who would use NFC and for what even if it was built in.

Also we know that IF NFC does catch on (seriously doubt it but assume) it will be in the next Apple Phone killing their future market and limiting it to older iOS devices pre NFC.

But the key question is... What would NFC be used for? Not a list of possible applications. What it would get used for in every day life.
I know how Bluetooth, Wifi, 3G etc benefits every day life.
NFC? I dont see it as a payment mechanism

I would use it at the moment for the MyCiTi bus which uses NFC currently... would be super awesome to not need to load money onto a seperate card, and use an NFC device linked to my bank account. Maybe make a max payment via NFC of R200 so it cant be abused.

Bluetooth 4.0 accomplishes the same thing...

Why? If apple decided to put NFC in iphone 6 then your whole project is/was redundant. That thing looks huge. May as well swipe your card, easier than finding an accessory for your phone, plugging it in, running some app probably, etc.

MyCiti - If I caught that service I would find that useful as it is just a simple tap.
So thanks for that example. I dont catch buses but I see the use for those that do.
Self service examples do make sense IF NFC is available.
I suppose paying for parking in Malls would be another example IF it was available

Payments - Well I am not so sure. Where could I use it? Vida Coffee etc?
Until payments via NFC are ubiquitous I dont believe its that useful.
I would carry a card anyway. I need to trouble a shop assistant anyway, No major difference

So self service payments is one good example (IF available)

Buying beers in a pub may be another but the NFC terminals need to be there.
I buy lots of beers and I pay cash so yes I would like to tap my phone.
Of course my pub (and its a big, profitable well known one) will probably get NFC in 2020

Can use it for much more than just making payments.

I have read the articles to.

Seriously what real world examples in SA today? MyCiti is a good example.
I suppose it works on Gautrain?
Having technology that will be useful in 3 years time (when you have your next phone) is kind of like owning a car in a place where there are no petrol stations

If NFC does become more ubiquitous then they will stick them on bank cards and I can use the card.
Banks wont want to be dis-intermediated.

I am open to being convinced otherwise.
But seriously what real uses does NFC have in SA today? (apart from MyCiti)

... guess Apple isn't even a current technology company, let alone future ;)

A few more articles for you are the Oppikoppi NFC trial last year ... and check FNB and ABSA dabbling in NFC technology as well. With 50 million+ devices out there, it's hardly a useless technology that was DOA. It's a sad the iOS is technological behind the rest of the mobile OS - but at least you guys have great battery life - right?!

S3 and Note 2 have NFC AND great battery life so we okay.

Amazing how you can make this an anti-Apple thread.

My question is simple.

What do you use NFC for today? (So far we have MyCiti buses and maybe Gautrain)
What will you use it for in say 6 months time?

Having a chip you cant use is the same as not having it at all.

Strutting around about something you cant use? Really
Its like having a colour TV when all the broadcasts are black and white.

You are correct to sy the banks will get this off the ground in the future.
* They will add it to credit/debit cards
* There will be banking apps in smartphones that utliise NFC

All this is bound to take a lot of time.
It has to roll out to terminals (payment, access etc.)
Thats costs money and time.

By then Apple & everyone will will have NFC

Ok so how do YOU use NFC today? Seriously

This is not a pro-Apple or anti Samsung post.
I dont believe that NFC will be significant for a few more years
And even then I dont see NFC as being that significant.

So call me a NFC doubter if you want to.... because I am one.

You realise that you can send data etc between phones as well? If I'm in a meeting and need to send a photo, video or link to a certain app - I can? Obviously you're going to tell me you'd never use it ... and wifi ... and battery drainage ... and legislation in South Africa ... and it's not mature ... or something similar - but the truth is I use between phones fairly often, as most my friends with phones in the last 6 months have NFC

You also get the pads to change profiles and settings whether you'd in a car, office, meeting etc

Having a chip you cant use is the same as not having it at all.

Kind of like the LTE chip so many Apple users bragged about on the previous version of the iPad ... ? 'dude - this a huge upgrade! The screen and LTE chip alone make it worth it!' Ummm ... ok

By then Apple & everyone will will have NFC

Phones have had since it last year already ... they've been running trials in our little 3rd world country since last year. Even the dying RIM have implemented NFC in 2011. However - you're right ... in a few years Apple will at least have it

I dont believe that NFC will be significant for a few more years

Years?
Seriously?

What you saying is correct for Apple users, as generally when they don't or can't do something, it is insignificant. Think 3G on the original iPhone ... through to MMS ... to copy/paste .... multitasking .... anything really. The excuse have remained - much like the OS - back in 2007 with 'I'd never user it' ... 'pointless feature!' ... 'it's not mature yet' .... 'here's a work around'.

You hit the nail on the head dude.

Some peeps just seem to take a lot longer to grasp new tech than others. Until they grasp it, they discount it. Sigh...

It is possible that 'years' may be an overstatement but what I am saying is that it is not ubiquitous or even used much TODAY.
I asked for how NFC is used today and I get sending files to another NFC phone.
Ok I can see that has a use that I would use a few times a year (maybe once a month).

I am not arguing from Apples perspective at all.
Leave Apple out the debate by all means because it is not relevant to this debate.
It seems it is you that is Apple obsessed.
Apple have a tiny market share in SA (as do Samsung Android based phones (or any premium Android based phones)
So given how few of these devices there are (even if Apple had it already), what is the motivation for companies to roll out NFC terminals?

You are keep referring to trials... thats my whole point. Its the future. When will we be able to use it as regularly as we use bluetooth, WiFi, 3G etc?

I am asking for info, and you chaps are getting snippy.
I keep asking the same question. What use does NFC have in SA TODAY?
Forget Apple from the debate. Its flawed to think that because my phone doesn't have NFC I therefore wont understand its use.
BTW my phone is just over 2 years old and I am due for an upgrade. Most phones from 2 years plus back didnt have NFC (incl Android phones)

So far we have
- Gautrain? (Has it been implemented on phones yet?)
- Sending and receiving files (I dont have NFC so I have to use Bluetooth or email)
- WHat else? I need help. Hell if you can point to uses I would love then I would consider adopting it.
I can think of one use I would love. Buying rounds of drinks in a pub (where one doesnt run a tab). A simple tap and PIN would be great. I do know that the pubs I go to dont have NFC based payments.

The NFC debate can be divorced from Apple.
If Apple implement NFC before it becomes ubiquitous then they havent missed the boat
If they are late to the game then they have made a boo boo.
Time will tell.
I dont know which way it will fall and neither do you. We have opinions. We dont know.

Yep.

iPhones are not for early adopters.

Samsung highlights this in some of its US adverts. One guy with a Galaxy SIII stands up from the que to let his parents get in when the shop was opening.

Leave the iPhone users alone.

NFC isn't something that works very well in an early adopter phase. I tried using it to share files between some apps from a Nexus7 to an S3 and we couldn't figure it out. You could see they were trying to work together but it just never gelled. Eventually we just gave up and used Bluetooth. Then you end up forgetting it even exists. I was pretty hyped up to use it when I got the Nexus and it was kind of a letdown for me.

It needs huge corporate investment to become something you can use a lot. Actually it would be brilliant; swipe your phone enter a keycode and buy something from a cashier. But those few actions require so much infrastructure to be present that it's all or nothing. Either it's fully invested and bought-in and unified, or it's ignored by everyone and remains an also-ran with potential, or just this thing you use to share songs and stuff once in a while.

What's my point, I forgot it? .. Yeah.. the point is that I feel even Google and Samsung and Nokia et al aren't really committed to making NFC take off. If they were, they'd be building the infrastructure and ensuring that it works seamlessly on their devices. Just saying 'yeah we've got NFC and Apple doesn't', is not enough; that only works for techeads like Dolby who are willing to do the legwork to make up for the deficiencies of the software devs who put this stuff in their phones.
