I stay in Durban and dont know much about Capetown but just by reading her description of the event sounds made up. Did she dream she was in a movie? She dodged the bullet Matrix style with bullet blowing her hair as it went past.

I work in the security and risk management field and have never heard of a gang initiation in Cape Town called "Kill a Tourist Day". Some other thoughts:
- Why was it only reported 10 days after the incident? And first in the UK? No local agency reported on it, no police action around New Years Eve, no police report,etc.
- How does she know it was a bullet? How does she know it was a gang initiation? If nobody saw the shooter how did they find all of this information? Why is the driver not reporting on it or forthcoming?
- The timing is suspect after the Angola Cabinda attack on the Togolese soccer team.
It is unfortunate that some of the international media houses (apparently) do not apply some basic investigative and diligence processes (when reporting on Africa issues). While we have our fair share of challenges (and then some) this type of irresponsible journalism is having a significant impact on an already ignorant Western population.

Police and the Cape Town City Improvement District's (CCID) security expert say they find it strange that a shooting involving an Irish actress in a crowded city street on New Year's Eve was not reported until four days later.
Victoria Smurfit, who starred as Orla O'Connell in the BBC drama Ballykissangel, told a London newspaper that the taxi in which she and her husband and his family were travelling was fired at about 11.40pm in Strand Street, near the intersection with Long Street.
Police said they first heard about the shooting when the taxi driver filed a complaint of attempted murder on January 4.

The Daily Mail quoted Smurfit as saying she felt a bullet "whizz past her as it tore through the cab".
She was also quoted as saying that police had told her the incident was probably to do with a gang initiation ceremony, dubbed "Kill a Tourist Day".
Smurfit and her husband, mother, brother and sister-in-law were travelling from the Uitsig wine estate in Constantia, where they had had dinner, to a venue in central Cape Town to celebrate the New Year.
Cape Town central police station spokesperson Randall Stoffels said police had not said the incident could have been related to a gang initiation.
"A projectile was found in the side of the door and taken for ballistics testing. No one was injured, but the rear window was shattered," he said.
"Claims that police told her it was 'Kill a Tourist Day' are nonsense since it was the taxi driver who told his passengers this."
Stoffels said investigators found the incident strange because the streets in the city centre had been teeming with police, security guards, members of the law enforcement agencies, and traffic, yet there were no witnesses to the shooting.
CCID security manager Moeneeb Hendricks said the taxi driver believed the "shot" could have been a firecracker that was set off near the vehicle.
Hendricks said he first heard about the incident last Monday when the taxi driver filed a complaint with police.
He said police and security officials were practising a crowd control drill for the World Cup around Long Street on New Year's Eve and if a gun had gone off they would have heard about it.

Doesn't everyone just love the timing of this little PR stunt.Nothing like an incident blown out of all proportion from some B grade Actress to get a piss poor showbiz career back on track by getting her name lit up in the UK press She is married to an advertising honcho after all...

For a washed up actress on the has been list and hailing from one of Ireland's richest families, It's amazing she has such clarity of recall on the night in question, considering by her own admission she had spent the day suiping wine on a wine farm, followed by more wine and dine at La Colombe til nearly midnight. Nah. I don't buy this nonsense. This is a cheap and nasty self promoting publicity stunt at South Africa's expense.

Funny though, how the police weren't even interested. Perhaps it was their bullet as they were firing at a suspect?
That doesn't surprise me. Usually they're not very interested.
You don't have to go that far. Just shoot someone in a taxi who looks foreign and is well dressed (in the evening) or dressed in typical tourist attire (hat, shorts, sunburn, camera around the neck).
So is there any evidence to back up this story? It doesn't require a bullet to make a hole in a car window.
The burning of cars in France goes back decades. Of course it is always convenient to blame everything on immigrants, especially if they also belong to a different ethnic group. In Japan all crime is committed by Chinese immigrants; in China it's probably all Japanese gangs.

What pressure are you talking about? The police acknowledged this early on. What has happened here is some washed up actress has invented a lot of nonsense to promote herself. Her story is full of embellishment and dramatisation that we would be correct to assume it is all invention until verified by someone not attempting to promote themselves. Thankfully the taxi driver did bother to report it to the police.
It's not sad. And I'm not a government supporter. It is quite plain that this woman was seeking publicity for herself.
