Killer Mobile Total Recall

I purchased the full version of Total Recall by KillerMobile, as I need a voice logger application that automatically records all my voice calls.
It has worked well since I installed it in January, when I got my SGS2.

With ICS now available the application has stopped recording, and they have posted a message that Total Recall will no longer work on unrooted phones running ICS.
According to them Samsung have radically changed the root files of the OS.
They have a fix for rooted phones though.

The options are:
Root the phone.
Look for another voice logger application that will work with ICS, and pay again.
Revert back to GB.

As I understand it rooting the phone will compromise the guarantee of the SGS2.

What I basically want is a phone that works as it is intended to.
I am not overly bothered by what launcher it uses, TouchWiz or whatever the nice to have features are.
The few apps that I have installed work the way they are intended to. (Apart from Totall Recall that is...)

I am not very technically minded and would prefer to run everything stock.
Is it possible to revert to an older OS?
If it is - how?

Any advice is always appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Easiest is to root and get it over with mate. I will take you 5 mins max to download the rooted kernel and another 3 mins to flash it with Odin.

BUT if you insist not rooting,

I would reckon you should download the previous firmware you had on your phone and flash it using Odin. You might go into bootloop, but (I think) if you do factory reset after flashing the firmware you should be okay.

Which kernel would you suggest?
Having read the various posts over the last few months it seems there are literally hundreds to choose from.

As stated I would prefer something that is as close to stock as possible.

Chainfire's kernel at XDA. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I used it extensively until I found Siyah and NEAK. I prefer Siyah currently.

Which firmware do you have?

I finally got the MTN ICS update this morning and had the same problem as the OP. I'm also not keen on rooting so I'm current trying out Call Recorder as an alternative. So far its not too bad.

Call Recorder is a Microphone based recording app, and as such the quality is BAD.
With TR call quality was near to perfect, with little/no background noise, even while driving.

According to KillerMobile it is not their fault that Samsung have changed the core OS files "so radically"

"And again, this issue is ONLY a result of the ICS OS update, so I suggest taking any complaints to Samsung/Android for modifying core OS files so radically." Quote from KillerMobile in answer to a query on their forum.

I noticed that Call Recorder's quality wasn't as good as Total Recall's, but it's still usable for my purposes. I'll probably end up rooting, but my S2 is only a few months old and I'd like to delay messing with it for as long as possible.

Cancel that last comment. Just ran a test with background noise (loud TV) and it wasn't good. I've looked at the rooting instructions for the S2, but that requires a windows machine & my house is Microsoft free zone at the moment so I'm stuck unless I do it at work.

I have been searching for a few hours already for a way with which to root my device without bricking it.
The forums aren't really helpful, as they all assume that everyone that wants to root has to be technologically clued up regarding everything.

There is no "noobs how-to" version available anywhere.... :(

I have found a link that OGroteKoning posted, but unsure if it is the right one, and where to proceed to from here.
http://download.chainfire.eu/154/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip?retrieve_file=1

There is also a link on the same page for a "TriangleAway" app that will remove the yellow warning triangle, and also reset your counters.
It has several warning in bold red that the process could brick your phone.
http://download.chainfire.eu/154/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip?retrieve_file=1

My question - are these the right downloads?

Like I said, I have not used CF-Root for a while now, but I'm sure Chainfire said the important thing is the last 3 characters. Read the first couple of posts again. At first glance, the link for the kernel looks correct if you are on LP7. Again, please his first coiple of posts and make sure.

I heard that triangle away can cause problems but I have read more success stories - use caution anyway.

Remember, although it is difficult to brick the SGS2, it can happen. Make sure you understand what you are doing and follow the steps.

The problem is that I do not know what I am doing.
I am forging ahead in the dark with no way of knowing if I am the right path.

Is there another way of getting rid of the triangle without using the app?

The other alternative at this stage is to revert back to 2.3.6, but there again I am uncertain as to where to find the right version.
I have literally spent the best part of the day looking for the various options, and it is pretty much all gobbldygook to me.

Okay. Relax.... It is really not that difficult. Chainfires instructions are easy to follow. You should be okay with it. It is the same process you would follow when you use Odin to flash firmware.

I have never used triangle away, so I don't know exactly how it works. I have a lil usb jig to get rid of the triangle and the flash count. But I have not even used that in a long time since I flash directly from my phone. You need the old bootloader for the usb jig to work anyway. And since you don't use Intratech's firmware, it won't work. The new firmwares have a new bootloader which Intratech replaces with the old one to make the usb jig work.

Having the triangle is no big issue. There is another lengthy method to get rid of it without using triangle away or the dongle.

When you say you flash directly from your phone I take it you use Mobile Odin?

I am not keen on rooting the phone, so I think at this stage the safest for me will be to downgrade the firmware to either 2.3.4 or 2.3.6.
What specifically do I need to do to do that?

I prefer to keep everything stock, so "genuine" firmware for the SGS2 will be a necessity. Preferably the CellC firmware that it came out with.

Any idea where to find that firmware, as it is notoriously thinly spread on XDA.

Yes. I use mobile odin to flash new Sammy firmwares because I can flash that and a modified kernel simultaniously. But I use CWM to do all other flashes - new kernel versions, roms, mods, themez, etc.

I don't know where you can find the stock original Cell C firmware. Have a look in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14506206

Again... the first couple of posts will have all the required info you need. But you will have to use Odin (PC) to flash the older firmware.

EDIT: I heard of people getting bootloops when going back to GB from ICS. I had it once when I messed around, but there are procedures to stop the bootloops. First thing I do is pull the battery for a couple of mins. That did the trick for me. I am on here often enough, so if you get stuck just shout.

Thanks for the link.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything available for CellC.

The only other option would be to go forward instead of back.

If there is anyone in the Centurion/Pretoria that can assist, I will appreciate it immensely.
I am dead-scared of ruining an otherwise perfectly good phone.

I am in Pta. Decide what you want to do, and give me a PM if you want me to assist you. We can goe eiter way - revert back to an old firmware, or flash the latest ICS. Latest ICS is LPD. It is a Netherlands Firmware with English (Afrikaans). I am currently running that and I am very pleased.

I don't know where to get CellC firmware. I will look around, but I can't promise anything.

Now that I think of it, CellC can perhaps has the firmware??? Failing which, I can try and assist ...

Thanks for the assistance.
Flashed the Intratech firmware, then flashed the Chainfire kernel.

Nothing exploded, nothing stopped working.
The house is still standing and the nights are still getting colder.... :)
