system freezes in middle of game with graphics corruption on restart. have to pull out card and reinsert to get graphics back to normal. happens with different games so not a game issue. all drivers are latest so shouldn't be an issue. system is 3 days old. all equipment running at stock speed at present.

any ideas?

I can see nothing in the hardware which is obvious. Only thing is, are you using watercooling on your GPU? If so, a misseated heatsink is the most obvious problem so I'd suggest you take your GPU temps and make sure they aren't soaring. Try taking the side off your case and blowing air with a fan over where the graphic card is. Make sure there aren't any cables blocking airflow around the graphic card.

I think the Pc might have burned a hole in your wallet, and some smoke might have went through your fans...

Start at the beginning ,Down load everest pc diagnostics.Check the temperatures and stress test each part.
Getting any bsods.?

going to try everest and then check. btw some forums claim dodgy chips on some batches of gtx 280. have you heard anything like that? did get 1 bsod but most times system just froze.

Sounds like the RAM onboard the GTX 280 ... can happen.

Test with any other graphics card you can get your hands on.

I have a similar setup with OCZ DDR-II on an X48i Rampage formula being the only major difference.

No issues or instability problems. That setup of your under Vista with SP1 and the latest WHQL certified drivers should be rock solid.

Smoke from the burnt leather inside my wallet is still a bit smelley though.

Corrupted graphics still present after reboot and POST screen is a tell tale sign of graphics card RAM being buggered.

UPDATE:
deleted partion, quick formatted hd, and loaded XP! installed all drives in sequence as normal, graphics card till end. now get this, after final reboot, system loads on first screen and what do I see, a corrupted snapshot of my old VISTA desktop! up until installing graphics card driver, the system behaved normally. uninstalled driver and got back xp desktop. think graphics card is FUBAR?

Yeah could be a dodgy GFX Card - Your best bet here is to get hold of another card and test it on your system.
