Just got a Kindle 2, but it seems to be a US version (B002), and i cannot access the settings page to change the WIFI settings, time etc.
How can i fix this?

I, sat next to a gentleman last week on the plane to Durban , he was reading (or trying to read for a better word ) an eBook on his Kindle , he told me that it was the worst investment he made –I personally have’nt used one, but in my opinion a Tablet would be much better choice as you can do so much more with it even if it is one of cheap Andriod ones

I was also a sceptic, till I got one .. now I love it.

Update ... I can't see mention of Wi-Fi for Kindle 2 on amazon's support page and according to the wired.com article I found

"Kindle 2 doesn’t have Wi-Fi but uses Sprint’s EVDO wireless data network to search and download books."

As for the tablet vs kindle - kindle is awesome to read books on .. even in daylight. If you want to play angry birds and you want something that resembles a mirror in daylight (oki that is a bit harsh perhaps) - then grab an iPad ;)

----------- scrap what is below .. I just realised mine is a Kindle 3 ... duh !

To get to wi-fi settings (mine also came from the US ... but then again don't they all?)
Home -> Menu -> (scroll to Settings, 2nd last option above Experimental) -> middle square click it

You should see a page with things like:
Registration
Device Name
Wi-Fi Settings <- scroll to here using the down arrow and middle click it
- it should now prompt you to turn wireless on and then list the available networks.

I've noticed it doesn't like it when my wi-fi access point is in hidden mode, but that is about the only catch I could see.

Failing that .. Kindle support is pretty amazing. They even cancelled a book I accidentally bought

Tablets are not easy on the eyes though, and the battery life doesn't compare to a Kindle. Kindles are for people who enjoy reading books and newspapers, as it accurately replicates the viewing experience.

I recently bought the new Kindle (third gen?) with wifi and 3G for my mom. She's mad about it and I'm pretty keen on getting one for myself. Very comfortable to use, fantastic display, excellent battery life and just an all-round pleasure to use. Excellent purchase? Hell yes :)

Agree 100%

Let's see Kindle VS Tablet: E-Paper (Kindle) VS Super AMOLED (if you are really lucky, almost always LCD instead). 30 days of battery life VS 5 - 13 hours of battery life. R1200 VS R5000 - R9000.

Super AMOLED isn't even competition to E-Paper when it comes to text, forget LCD. That alone justifies the Kindle IMHO.

Pretty much sums it up.

If you are a serious reader then you will find that the Kindle is an amazing device: the display is easy on the eyes, the battery life (especially if you turn off the wireless when you don't need it) is something like a month between charges, the number of books available (a large number of them free) is awesome etc.

Add Amazon's service - I dropped mine (for the n-th time & screwed it), reported it to Amazon on Thursday & received the replacement on Monday - and you have an unbeatable combination.

Tablets have their place, but serious reading is not one of them ...

K2 US (B002* serial nos) is hardwired to use the US Sprint network, so no changes to network settings can be made. You'll have to do your downloads to a PC then upload to Kindle via USB.

K2i (B003* serial nos) is the international version where you can change networks.

I have an Ipad, a Playbook and a Kindle and for reading the Kindle wins hands down. If you where expecting to do more than that you will be disappointed, the browser is very basic and hard to navigate.

Horses for courses: the Kindle is an unrivalled dedicated reader for simply reading books and other texts with its easy-on-the-eyes non-backlit and extremely energy-thrifty e-ink screen.

Go for a tablet if you want something more closely resembling your laptop, with multi-functionality and a backlit LCD screen (and miles less battery staying power!).

That Blows - i bought it from a dude as a bday present for my mom! I asked him about the WiFi and he said it works great, clearly leaving out that it only works in the US. He wont take it back.
I’m pretty bitter about this!

The Kindle is amazing. I can't ever see myself going back to books. 2000+ books carried around in a device that is lighter then a single book, has a battery that lasts forever, a dictionary inbuilt, free 3G for life(though slow) and it's so easy to use and read. I've tried reading on a tablet but it killed my eyes while I can read for a few hours on my Kindle.

Latest news online today is that Amazon will probably introduce a touchscreen Kindle this autumn (i.e. our spring) while also reducing the price of the standard Kindle (though this may be for the ads-supported Kindle, which is not available outside the US). Amazon is also said to be on the brink of unveiling its own tablet.
