Hi

what is the cheapest I can a kindle for? Is it worth taking one of the cheaper ebook readers? like the kalahari one? what about the kindle fire pricing?

I bought a Kindle 3G from Makro at R2400 with a leather case and for reading I rate this as probably my best buy. I have read 3 books on it already and don't think that I will buy a normal printed book again. The cheapest Kindle would probably be directly from Amazon, I did not want the hassle and could not wait for it to be delivered therefore the Makro purchase.

The Kindle fire is not my cup of tea, I wanted a decent e-reader and not a tablet. This is ultimately what you need to decide, do you want a tablet or an e-reader. If you want an e-reader, Kindle in my opinion is the best. Huge range of books at a great price (Some free) was deal clincher for me.

As far as e-readers go, Kindle is easiest the best. You can buy directly from Amazon - they deliver in about 2-3 days. Depending on exchange rate, you should be paying around R1300 for a new Kindle 4 (non 3G).

+1 on the Kindle.

I have bought about 6 of them via Amazon (this now the previous one, aka the Kindle Keyboard).
Buying it via Amazon is in no way a schlep...... register on Amazon, order, pay via CC, two/three days later DHL rocks up at your front door. It cost me in the region of R1100-R1300 per kindle, depending on the amount I bought.

Kalahari one = backlit = bad for eyes = eyestrain.

The Kindle's competitors, like the Nook, and the current top Sony model, all typically use the same eInk screen, so quality should be similar. For straight reading you want something with an eInk screen rather than an LCD.

Of the eInk readers the Kindle is the easiest to get. You order it from Amazon and they deliver it to your door. I've ordered on a Monday and received on the Thursday. Quick, easy and cheaper than buying locally. Right now you can get the basic Kindle 4 for under R1250 delivered to your door (duties and shipping included). A Kindle Touch (without 3G) will be a bit over R1500.

The Kindle is brilliant for reading books. Be warned though, I often find myself buying more books then I intended because it is so easy to purchase through the device and Amazon.

I do not get any eyestrain from reading LCD. Others do though. I think as a purist reading experience you have to go the e-ink route. The Kobo reader is also getting some good reviews, maybe it's worth looking at?

Just received my Kindle Touch (wifi, no ads) directly from Amazon (yes, they now ship this internationally).

Really cool !

I had a Kindle DX already (for manuals, textbooks) but it is too big for travel.

If you can still find one, Makro was recently advertising the 'classic' keyboard model, with unlimited free lifetime 3G, for R1999, which is cheaper than Amazon's current all-in price shipped to South Africa. If you only want a basic e-reader the new Kindle (also known as the Non Touch) is the best deal, as mentioned above. The Touch version, which has just been released internationally, has a lot more features (touch-screen control, double the storage, ability to do text to speech and play audio files) and itself comes in two flavours, either without 3G (WiFi only) or with free 3G -- but note that this 3G is limited generally to accessing Amazon and Wikipedia.

I find it depends very much on the LCD.

Was extremely surprised how soft the kindle was on one's eyes. I have trouble keeping my eyes open when reading a book, but not with kindle.

Yeah the kindle is pretty epic. Makes me excited each time I read a book :p

What about the Sony Reader Wifi? Seems awesome but I dont see it in SA?

When looking at the Kindle, I took a look at that too. They were rated very close, but most reviews leaned towards the Kindle. Both had good sides to them.

The thing that caught my attention was the fact that I can make notes on the screen. Also what its price in SA and does Sony SA have it?

No idea.

Not sure about the new Kindle but my Kindle 3 can also makes notes on the screen.

I have a Kindle 4 that I ordered direct from Amazon and its a very good device. The screen is super easy on the eyes. The battery life is also brilliant. Been using it for a bit more than a month and only charged it once which is quite impressive.

Unfortunately I bought it with the intention of subscribing to some of the magazines on Amazon. The biggest pain is that magazines sold via the amazon store dont have many pics. Soldier Of Fortune isnt nearly as entertaining without pics.

Its great for books but I'm not getting the time to use it so will probably sell it.
