The more we look at the coming year in terms of gadgets the more clear it is becoming. Amazon’s Kindle will die! Yes, it will die unless it changes into something a lot more useful. The idea of doing a few things brilliantly doesn’t hold water at the price of a Kindle if there are devices at close to the pricing of a Kindle that can do a thousand more stuff.
We are still in the speculation phase regarding the mythical Tablet PC from Apple Inc. but if it is true that it will be unveiled later this month and be put to market come March 2010, then Amazon is in for a tough time. There are already other manufacturers coming out with tablets of their own that is multi-function, multi-touch and who knows what else. Some of them are even cheaper than a Kindle as things stand now.
If Apple brings out a Tablet PC and the market is as eager as I think it is for the product then the Kindle for one is a device that should squirm in anguish. Even if Amazon were to restrict their content to the Kindle only, the problem still remains with Apple’s proven publishing ability as can be seen in their online music and software businesses. If they go head first into books and other content for a possible Tablet PC, Amazon would be wise to rather work with Apple, than to fight them. Either way, Kindle will die.
