I think I may know the answer to this question already but perhaps there is another way.

When it rains hard, I have the problem that the ADSL light on my Billion 800VGT modem starts flashing orange/yellow slowly, then faster and then becomes stable again. This takes about 20 seconds and my happen as often as once a minute. Obviously while this is happening, my connection drops.

Common sense tells me this is a line problem somewhere between my house and the exchange but the Telkom technicians have been out serveral times to solve the problem.

Are there modems that are less sensitive perhaps? Telkom ISP with 384 connection.

Thanks and all
Don

You lucky, when it rains hard my line disappears completely and only returns once the heavy rain is over.
It did this with my Netgear and now still does it with my Microcom.
I think it is a Telkom equipment problem because my line to the exchange box is only 150 meters yet my attenuation is 52dB's.

Unfortunately a good deal of Telkom's last mile network runs through muncipal infrastructure such as storm drains in some cases. For example, it is not uncommon to see Telkom techs pumping water out of man holes in some places of Cape Town after heavy rain fall. This affects all industries relying on Telkom to provide us with connectivity of some sort.

This may not be the case where you live (you could have lines overhead rather than underground), or a problem on the last mile. The problem could very well be a leak in your own house where Telkom's line terminates. Try eliminating all possibilites of moisture coming into contact with the line on your premises before calling Telkom techs out.

I hope you solve the problem soon. Good luck

No Telkom must employ some skill, everytime they come out here about 10 people arrive in a backie and sit around talking ***** and I act dumb :)

Telkom can't stop cable theft or supply a stable service...asking them to stop the rain is almost as bad as being a mass murderer of baby seals and virgin nuns, then still expecting to get an Xmas gift from Santa for being good :P

I've also had this problem before, but seeing as telkom techs don't like working in the rain they were never around when it happened. Perhaps they should rather invest in some umbrellas and raincoats? :D

Most probably a weak join at 1 of the telephone poles, only Telkom techies can check it out and sort out! Most of the time they won't check each pole, only the 1 closest to your property, but if you keep pestering, they should be able to find the problem. They should have a device that they plug into your socket and send a signal across the line, that will help them identify how far from your house the problem lies.

Follow rsifan's advice.

Log a fault and explain that you have an intermittent line fault most likely caused by a dry joint between the jack and the DP or SDC.
